Originally we had it on a tripod (like a speaker stands for gigging) but Ive managed to fit it to the ladder at the back and re-set within five minutes and with a better signal.
Its the best telly reception we have ever had including all sorts of aerials an boosters - all for £40 incl the tripod
Thanks again for your assistance yesterday - I think the clue to sucess is patience - move it only a degree at a time until the missus shouts "thats it! leave it!

was just going to mention weather.
did exactly the same first time too, desperate to get it to work, but it was never going to happen because it was raining!!!
don't write off the tripod as sometimes the ladder is pointing the wrong way!
Glad to see you making the little portable dish work. I keep thinking about getting one but notice nearly everyone using those fancy automatic ones. I started thinking it's a status symbol.
By the way if you have an android smart phone you can get a free sat finder program ap. I think there are several I have SatelliteAR but I think there are others, just tell it what sat you are looking for and point it to the sky. The needs to be connected to the internet with this one.

...we are in Spain with the Lidl sat set and whilst it worked in France until we were half way down and since we seem to be unsuccessful in getting it to fire up.
Am I right in saying that the same rules apply - ie 18 degrees back from South and so on or does that change as you move about Europe (I woiuld have thought that as the satellite is thousands of mile away my 1400 miles movement on the ground mattered not a bit??/
I really need to get this fixed as the wife wants to talk to me if the telly doesnt work
Thanks in advance

And make sure you are aligning the dish to a strong signal - Sky News on 12207 or s4c on 12129 first...then fine tune it with worse / weaker signals.
The UK TV satellites are at 28 degrees east of south...if you are on the meridian.
Move east or west of that, then the alignment will change.
For example, if you were in the Ukraine, then you would point the dish almost due south, as you would be at 28 degrees east!
smallest movement can mean the difference of a few 100 kms away from the satellites ...as the satellites are 36000kms away...

If they're set just "off" vertical they can be aligned onto Astra 2D quite easily provided you turn them nice and slowly.
No point aligning to 2D...it has no channels on since Feb 2012!
Current UK TV satellites are 2a, 2b, 1n, and Eutelsat 28 (previously called Eurobird 1) - all ocated at 28.2-28.5 east of south.

I doubt that a 40 cm dish would get a signal in Spain? Others with more experience will put me right though.

A 40cm dish will just about receive those channels on 2a south beam and 2b south beam - like sky news and a few god / shopping channels, and bbc radios.
It will not get 2a north beams or 2b north beams, nor 1n and maybe not even some of the EB1 channels, but it will get some.
It depends where in Spain you are. As you go further south than say Tarragona the chances of getting any UK programmes on a 40cms dish are much reduced. I fail to get anthing much on a 65cms dish.
You will be able to receive Astra 1 programmes and Hotbird but they are mainly foreign stations.

The quality of the dish/size did concern me BUT we did get a signal halfway down France (very good in fact)
I suspect I may be tilting the dish off the vertical too much as Gaspode pointed out. I'll try again tomorrow

OK - I have now read satandpc's posts and the rest. It may wel lbe that my £40/40mm dish isnt man enuf for the job now we are so far south
Is there a cheap and cheerful 'clip on' similar setup that would pick up some UK telly or would I then be into the 'real' stuff.
We have DVD's and downloaded to laptop stuff galore so I'm not bothered enough to invest a great amount...
