Sealed batteries are designed to recombine any gas that is produced during operation. Gels run at a maximum charging voltage that is below the gassing level. That is why the EBL maximum is 14.3V.
In normal operation, sealed batteries and gels of course, should not need to be vented. The problem occurs if one or more of the cells in a battery fails - usually at end of life.
Most batteries have a small hole in the end of the top cover plate. A small plastic elbow will push into this and a poly-tube can then be run to the outside. If you look at the picture of my battery location (it's a tray sunk into the floor beneath the settee) you can just see one of the venting elbows (pale grey) at the right-hand side of the top battery.
