My question - do LNB's fail,

Yes.

TR5 wrote:
and is this likely, or is it more likely to be the receiver, in your opinion.

things that can fail on a satellite system:
LNB
cable connections
cable
water in the cable - shorts the system
poor tuner
poor conenctions on tuner
poor tuner power supply
dish alignment issue
weather

without testing each individual part, you never can tell.
So check ALL cables and connectiosn, and make sur ehtey are all waterproof
So swap the LNB for a "normal" univesal one and test.
Swap the receiver to another one and test.

Freesat is only available on Freesat receivers.
Freesat is NOT available on your Comag.

The "free to air" channels, many of which are on Ffreesat, others available on "non freesatmode", and on a sky box without a sky card, will be available on your comag.

Given the amounts of satellites up in the skies, there are many free to air channels that you will be able to receive....but many will not be in english.

www.lyngsat.com

shows all frequecies for all satellite...select a satellite and it shows you the channels available.

to help in pointing the dish use dishpointer.com - select the satellite youy want, place the icon on the google map, and it shows you the directions to point the dish.

thanks for the info, will try them today

LNB's do fail, my Oyster stopped working and Ten Haaft guessed it was the LNB based on their experience and sent me a new one, dual LNB. Also, the connections to the LNB need checking as they are very exposed. As Ten Haaft took a long time sending the replacement, under their 3 yr warranty, I bought a new one from Screwfix quite cheaply.
