Dear friends anonymous, I have my pedantic hat on today, when describing someone 'doing stuff' i.e ''you are going away'', please, it is not written as 'your going away', but, at worst, ''you're going away''. Thankyou, good night. Jack, shedbrewer.
Thanks for all those that replied. Been motorhoming here and in Europe - France, Spain and Italy - for many years, mainly staying on aires so I know the risks (or lack of them) that this entails. BUT - a friend had his van broken into on a main street in Althea. The scamps punched the doorlocks, went through the van, taking whatever wasn't screwed down and exited through the sliding door. Probably took them no more than 60 seconds. So......realising that most opportunistic thieves do just this, I thought I'd try and make it difficult for them. Got a flashing light, got some nice alarms from Maplins - just wanted some advice on where to get high security locks fitted.
We have a Sigma alarm with all the doors and lockers alarmed plus engine immobilisation.
However, with the blinds drawn there is no visible indication that the MH has an active alarm, hence no deterrent. To overcome this shortcoming in system I have fitted two flashing LED's outside the internal blinds.
It amazes me to see so many MH with alarm systems with their status indicating LED fitted in the dash, such is ok for a car but not effective as a deterrent in a MH when the blinds are closed. This shortcoming in installers thought process needs attention.

Soon heading South in our new pride and joy (Oh, OK - she's a T reg Starfire but she's new to us and we love her) and I'm looking to improve security. Can anyone recommend some extra locks for the cab doors (Peugot Boxer). How easy are they to fit? How many hours labour for a garage? What sort of cost for the locks? What is the meaning of life? (Actually, ignore the last one. Evidently the answer is 42)
How about a removable steering while. If your vehicle doesn't have an airbag on the wheel, an easy and very visible fix.
I recently met a member of one in our local C&CC DA who has this fitted and as well as the security aspect, it helps with swivel seats.
If it has an airbag, then there may be insurance issues however.
A worthwhile exercise is to lock up your vehicle and try to gain access yourself through whatever means (non-damaging) at your disposal except the keys.
This morning at a car boot sale, I did exactly this as I returned to the 'van with a couple of bags, sat my keys on the table and locked the hab door then realised the keys were still inside.
I found my missus and of course she didn't have the spare keys.
I still had my car/house keys though and managed to open the locks on one side of the 'van garage using the key for the removable car towball, and after unloading half the boot, including 2 folding electric bikes, baskets, table and screen covers, and unscrewing the push button lock on the hab/garage, I got in and retrieved the keys.
Whilst this was going on, there was a BMW police car about 50 metres away
The car park attendant was giving me some curious looks but knows us as a regular so didn't seem too concerned.
I do have the habitation and garage doors alarmed but not switched on. The cab doors have deadlocks so no chance there.
Cheers,
Alan

I shouldn't worry about a thief entering your motorhome via your garage Alan - it would take any normal person at least half a day to get past all your 'stuff'
