I have always been a bit puzzled with ITunes partly through out and out ignorance, partly because of what I have read, (and probably lost the plot doing it).

I am\was until now, under the impression that one of the probs with itunes is they are not transportable other than to Apple devices. Perhaps I am a few years behind the curve but if anyone has an explanation I would be most obliged.

So little time. So much to learn. Sad

Can anybody tell me the easiest and quickest way to do this?

Hi Tim

As has already been posted; you'll need software to accomplish this, most media playing and CD writing software will do it, it will extract the digital data from the tracks on the CD and generate files from the tracks which can be saved to the computers hard drive. There will also be options you can set, i'd recommend MP3 files (as they're most common), a bit rate of 128, and a sample of 44000. this will result in CD quality files which can then be written to the usb memory stick. experiment with the software a bit as it will most likely have options to automatically name the files and include the tag data that can be seen on displays whilst a song is being played etc.

You can't simply copy the songs off a CD as you would a file using windows explorer on a normal data CD, when you explore a music CD (CD-DA) in windows, you will see a file for each song, but if you copy these you'll end up with lots of tiny files that are useless. these files hold information that allow a computer to access the underlying tracks on the CD.

There are usb devices, like a spindle, whereby you can load many many CDs and the accompanying software will use the device to rip/extract all the songs from all the CDs automatically, without intervention. however they cost a fortune.

Hi Pusser, I also have a Brennan and it gets my vote for home use. However, I have all my CDs on it at full size to maintain the quality so didn't use it to copy them to a USB. Interesting idea for transfer of MP3s. It runs on 24v so could be a possible for MH use.

Hi Andrew

You may find that you are wasting a lot of space; there are certain specifications for the quality of CD audio, I can't remember exactly what they are, but I am very certain it's 2 channels (stereo), bit rate of 128 Kbps and a 44KHz sample rate. If the CD is extracted in an uncompressed audio format such as .wav it will be huge, possibly around 55mb per song. however if it's extracted to a compressed format such as .mp3, so long as the appropriate settings are used; stereo, 128 Kbps and 44KHz, the quality will be the same but the file size much smaller, possibly around 1/10th of the size depending on the contents of the song/sound.

Compression doesn't mean that something has to be lost, it will be if the settings go below the specification for CD quality, but the codecs used to encode/decode .mp3 files process the data in a more intelligent manner. the best example is video files; the raw data used to hold 24fps at a particular colour depth is very large, with a representation of each and every complete frame being stored. then there are codecs that compress the data; they may store the complete first frame, but then only store the changes between the first and second frame, instead of the complete second frame, if that makes sense. by employing this and many other techniques; media can be compressed without losing information.

Hi Lee, Thanks for all your input. I know you are right. Space wasn't a problem in this case as I bought the Brennan with the larger disk so I put all 250 Cds on at full size and have loads spare. I had already copied them to the pc in compressed MP3 format prior to getting the Brennan so used those files to copy to the USB sticks.

How many CDs do you have? I've just been scanning some of my files, and each album takes up between 70MB and 150MB. You're going to need a hefty USB stick to take a decent collection. You might want to look at a USB hard disk (if, whatever you're connecting it to will take it). Loads of room for not much money - Ģ per GB better value than a stick.

I use iTunes to manage all my music. My CDs are ripped into iTunes, and MP3s acquired from elsewhere all get imported into iTunes. There again, we are big iPod users here.

Gerald
