Just got back from the supermarket. Was going to do a Sunday Roast..........but the thieves wanted £12 for a leg of lamb.

I just dont understand why the price of meat has shot up. Can someone explain in laymans terms why it has gone up by 50% over the last two years?

Also, why is Pork so much cheaper than lamb or beef? The latter eat mostly grass (free), plus most beef is a by-product of the dairy trade, but pigs need to be fed with swine feed (expensive).

I would guess a fair percentage due to currency debasement, commodities rising due to speculation and fuel costs. We all need food so its priced at what people will pay. And it is actually a lot cheaper than it will be next year.

I suspect also that some subsidies from Brussels are no more.

I accept there are more reasons which I have either forgotten or did not know.

You obviously were not at Tesco where lamb joints were half price yesterday.

Meat seems to go in cycles - often huge joints of beef are a bargain, this week lamb and a couple of weeks ago, chickens the size of turkeys.

[If you remember, this last winter was quite harsh,The sheep could not get to the grass through the snow conditions,so the farmers have to buy in feed until the snow melts,In parts of wales that was for 6 to 8 weeksThey also have to buy in vitamins ect to give the sheep what they are not getting out of the grass,Lastly they have to spend thousands of pounds on chemicals to condition the many acres of land and grass they need to graze the sheep every few years,I would expect this has a great effect on the cost of lamb for sure,Hope this helps Satis Smile

I don't know where you live but Lamb around here is a lot more than £12 for a leg. I would have had two at that price

I bet it wasn't English lamb

i d be very careful buying those as i got a leg of lamb from the co op and was looking forward to it... opened the wrapper and it stank vile so i phoned the co op to be told it smells like that when you first open it and to let it stand..... Surprised

An hour later i took it back to the store as it was well off despite looking ok andgot a refund and a voucher.... not nearly enough as 3 months on i still cant face lamb and it was my favourite....

£ 18 in my area

I think it was on Countryfile last week that it was said that after the last foot and mouth outbreak, where thousands of sheep were slaughtered, many farmers gave up and did not restock. Same in New Zealand and Spain. There is now a world shortage of sheep and this has of course driven up the price of lamb. Can't commemt on beef or pork.

Sadly grass isn't free nor is the machinery and diesel to run tractors free. Chemical and feed costs are related to the price of oil. Rules and regulation imposed by the EU don't help either. Tesco and the like decide what the payments are and so charge accordingly.Try getting into farming, quickest way to loose your lottery winnings.

And dont forget sheep have1,2 and just now and again 3 lambs once a year, pigs however have several litters of up to 12 or so piglets each year.
