Am we the only ones that brew sloe gin. Crying or Very sad

Where we live sloes grow everywhere, and it would be a crime to waste them.

We picked, washed and bottled them (with a smigeon of gin). Laughing

Roll on Christmas when we can drink the stuff.

(Who mentioned Christmas. Embarassed )

No sloes near us but we do have a wild damson tree growing down the field. Damson gin is delicious too. We bottled some about a month ago and it'll be just right for Christmas - that's if we can stop 'sampling' it.

I've made a few gallons in the past but I don't drink these days so don't bother now, although I think I've a couple of bottles around somewhere. There's a lot of sloes around right now, very early and won't need a frost to pop them either

Confession time Sprinta. I bung mine in the freezer for a wee while. That gets the maggots out too. Laughing

I made some in early autumn last year then read that it was best to wait until after the first frost to pick the sloes.
So I will have to make some more this year - just to compare the results! Mmmmm

If you wait that long.........They'll all be nicked by those that spread the rumour. Shocked

Get pickling and bottling.......You know it makes sense.

oooohhh! that reminds me, the first batch I ever did about 20 years ago - I steeped the sloes in the sugar and gin, and all the maggots came swimming out Laughing never got them all as each bottle later on contained a couple. Devon Tequila I should have called it Laughing Laughing Laughing

By 'eck it was like rocket fuel though Twisted Evil

A Danish friend says they used to make Sloe Akvavit using Akvavit in place of gin. ~The Germans do something similar as well, perhaps other countries have their own versions also?

love Sloe Gin, substitute honey for sugar mmmmmmmmmmmm

Another I tried last year as an experiment was Bilberry Vodka now that is awesome my own trial have not seen any reference to it in books or on web. Superb colour and a taste to die for, just crushed Bilberries and poured over some supermarket own brand vodka last year.

No sugar or honey added just left for a year, flavour is truly delicious, just needed straining.
