Parked in in Greece and we've got our Faculty X antenna mounted on the roof on a £3 eBay suction mount. We've got a load of available hotspots and two open ones, one is a Hotel and the other a Resort.
Now obviously I have no way of knowing what sort of antenna's they are both using, but I was able to find their locations using the SSID' and plotted them on a map. The hotel is a 'boutique' hotel looking at the website with 4 rooms so it can't be that sophisticated. The other is a large resort complex so I'd imagine they have some pretty good broadcast equipment.
Clean line of sight down the coast to both of them - distances are 4km and 14km respectively!
Connected to the 4km one at 5.5Mbps, 70% Singal Strength and 65% Link Quality.
The 14km one connects at 1Mbps, 42% Signal Strength and 38% Link Quality.
We've had a 85% success rate finding unsecured wifi over the last 6 months away and this is clearly why!
Hi Addie
Hope you are having a great time in Greece.
Which model Faculty X do you use and do you know whether it would work with a Mac?
Best wishes

Hello Alshymer.
Greece is lovely thanks! This is our pitch (you can see the antenna on the roof: /Click here for picture
I know a friend of mine uses his antenna with his Macbook Pro - his website is here with a contact option at the bottom of the page. He might be able to be more assistance then I:
The link £3 suction mount has ended but if you look at that picture and search eBay for 'suction camera mount' and arrange high to low it should be there. Make sure you get one which looks the same - I tried a few before I settled on that one.
Anything you can do with a PC you can do with MAC.
Don't believe the doubting techie types that were brought up on Pc's that say 'oh macs dont work with this or with that etc etc.'
I've had so many work based server guys tell me the system isn't working right because of my mac... who then finally had to admit it was a setting issue with them and not with me.
I am beginning to think Bill Gates has organised a conspiracy to protect the empire!
In fact, not seen any English vans yet in over a week in Greece.

There are some driver related issues with this device and a Mac and there is a long thread on it here. Nothing to do with the Mac but the manufacturers unwillingness to provide an updated driver or to allow third parties update it via open source.
I can't comment further because I haven't used one with a Mac.
After the initial 'shock to the system' of changing and having to find your way around a different layout, I find the way they operate so much easier to deal with.
Windows I think attempted to bring PC's back to something more modern with the latest operating systems but I think they are still mile behind.
Trouble with mac is the cost of getting involved as all their gear is nicely made with expensive components etc. but once you dip your toe in and try it is really fun / addictive.
Phone / Ipad / Mac - all easy to use, very visual and functional.
Oh and did I mention no virus problems or stalling / cease up issues either.
Hi
Couldn't agree more about Apple. If I ever have to use PC it drives me crazy.
Once you buy a Mac you will never look back.
Thanks for all your replies.
