Redkite,
I'm very surprised you cannot find a hand controlled truck, There are disabled truck drivers about. If you cannot find one, I would ask if the lesson/test can be taken in your vehicle. I don't think they can refuse under the Disability Discrimination Act? You could also seeek further advice on this last point.

just to clarify... i don't think the adaptions alone has put it over, it seems we were close to it already. it's being looked into, all very confusing.
and no peedee, i can't find a driving school with an accessible vehicle. the very helpful staff at DSA have checked the register also. i'm sure there are lots of disabled drivers out there but my oh is tetraplegic and needs wired in hand controls. they won't give on him using our vehicle, even when i quoted dda.
we can't upgrade to 4tonne. so looking into either losing about 200kgs or replating and me being the sole driver.
i may even do my c test and supervise him driving ( in 3yrs ).

That is a bit off and I am sorry to read that. The only thing I can think of is try contacting one of the disabled motoring organisations for advice. The only one I know of is >The DM< They used to have a motorhome section but believe it is no more.

sorry i can't quote... so grizzlyj, thanks for all the info. scared now. think we'll see what weight we can lose first and then maybe go the replate to 3850 and sole driver route.
peedee, thanks also. will try them but don't have much hope. sometimes it's just too exhausting fighting the discrimination. this motorhome was to make our lives easier and we have so far managed 2 nights in it, after buying it in june.
we just need to find the quickest way to sort a solution so we can get out there and explore
Sorry to hear about your difficulties. How about using one of these EZETOW TRAILERS, It would take some of the weight without the disadvantages attached to having to reverse a conventional trailer.

I know what you mean but don't let it get you down. Its a bit naughty of GB Coachbuilt not to have warned you about weight difficulties and not to have uprated the chassis for you. It looks like you will have to go to 3850 anyway but it still might be worth you considering a trailer as well if this still leaves you with insufficient margin.

Just a quick update.
we went for the 3850 uprate solution and have had air suspension added. paperwork on it's way to sv tech. not ideal but if we get on with the motorhome we may consider getting a 4 ton in the future and OH doing his test in that.
if we don't get on with it we'll be hiring it out...
You shouldn't need a tachograph for the test. Tachographs are only needed for commercial vehicles not motorhomes as they are a different class of vehicle.

Joe
But there is no Motorhome specific test, its either C1 or C depending on what weight you want.
They are both aimed primarily at commercial drivers, and tacho knowledge and use is in both the theory and practical. It is daft but there you go.
"All vehicles used for category C1, C1+E, C and C+E tests must be capable of 50 miles per hour (mph) - 80 kilometres per hour (km/h).
It must be fitted with:
* externally mounted nearside and offside mirrors
* seatbelts fitted to seats used by the examiner or any person supervising the test
* a tachograph
* an anti-lock braking system (ABS) - please note that trailers don't need to be fitted with ABS"
More requirements specific to C or C1 are on the link.
