I think I can add some valid points here, as already said speedos overread by a few percent, generally in the 3% to 5% over range. Motorcycle speedos, Suzuki especially, can over read by over 10% this is generally to enable barroom bragging rights about how fast it goes.

I've been doing trackbased landspeed racing for a number of years and that originally started out as a quest to do the elusive 200mph as a genuine speed on a roadbased motorcycle, and not just going by what the erratic speedo said.

Whilst all of our runs would be timed officially by using professional timekeepers we always used to carry our own satnavs mounted on the bike to enable us to have an immediate feedback of the run and a confirmation of our speed. Sort of belt and braces, just in case the lights were actuated in error by an animal or bird or even by blowing leaves on occasion.

We found that satnavs are invariably extremely accurate in measuring speeds whenever there was a sufficient sampling time to allow the calculations to have a valid meaning. When you are running at 200+ mph going through the 30yd timing light section at the end of a measured mile you tend to be accelerating very slowly and so the rate of change of speed is minimal and so the difference between the official speed and the satnav speed was always minimal.

Motor vehicle speedos are designed specifically to read faster than actual.

So I wasn`t doing 140mph at Cadwell last time out. Sad

Dave p

I very much doubt you would be on stock gearing Dave when you were on a track bike, adding a couple of teeth to the back sprocket would easily add 10% to your speedo 'speed'. I can remember seeing 220mph on occasions racing at Santa Pod when my 1/4mile speeds were only around 155 really. Laughing
