hi , i,m sit here in france trying to get online with the wifi. i can find open public networks but when i conect it wants a password and user name . so how do i get one, both. I was looking at SFR Public Wifi yesterday and nearly broke down trying to get online. help! what am i doing wrong here. i'm using a france Orange 3G dongle at the moment but it''s expensive. lovely weather though!
The "free" ones that we use most are in hypermarkets, they still need a password and asking the staff is usually successful, free WiFi is also available very close to McDonalds and in most Tourist Offices - although some only have very limited availability.
Generally internet access is expensive in France c/w UK - we are compelled to use satellite due to the non-availability of wired broadband, that costs about €25 per month for a limited bandwidth.....
The SFR public wifi only works if you have a SFR landline (or maybe pay for the service). Like "bt openzone" in the UK.
If you don't have an account (which you wont) - you can't access it! So save your effort (note: some SFR spots are twinned with FON and BT Total Broadband accounts may work - if this is the case they'll have FON in the name and also have BT in the dropdown list or on a separate link, These are fairly rare though)
Easist with long range wifi aerial, POI databases of McDonalds and FON spots with Autoroute or tomtom. Or just get lucky. Details on our tips page.
/says he using yet another free wifi spot

We found more campsites this autumn offering free wifi.
Whether we were just lucky, or more are offering the free service to entice campers, I don't know!

PAYG French Orange Sims on Ebay. 9 euros a month unlimited (fair usage). I didn't think that too expensive. Bona fide too I should imagine, it compares to what Orange is offering PAYG here, £5 a month internet.
Check your deal sufiejim. I think you have to "buy" it in advance from your credit balance. Otherwise I think it can be quite prohibitive.

We only managed to get free wifi twice on our recent two and a half week visit to France. Both occasions were at campsites and involved them giving us a password and sitting in or near reception with my macbook. A third campsite offered wifi at a cost, but we weren't desperate enough. At Cité Europe on the way home I hovered outside MacDonalds with my iPhone, but picked up nothing.

If you don't use an external antenna you might as well not even bother. If we relied on ours I think we would have got online twice in the last six months, not nearly every day!

Dick, I think it is Orange World you are referring to? If so this is a similar deal to Vodafone Data Traveller in as far as you can't use it in a dongle but in a mobile phone. You can probably 'get away with' tethering it and getting online that way.
If you just need occasional internet, why not grab a list of McDs locations, or add them to your sat nav. They may not often be in the prettiest of locations but there are loads of them, they are easy to connect into, free and you don't need any fancy equipment though a booster (from £9.99) will enable you to stay outside in your van.
