I am a SFR client and as a loyal long time customer they presented me with a free '3G Dongle'.
It came with €5 of credit. I tried many times while going to and in Holland but although it said it was connected I could not access the net at all.
After coming back home to Normandy I took the Dongle and laptop into Cherbourg to complain I could never get connected. The girl in the SFR store connected immediately. I felt a fool.
I loaded another €16 onto the SIM and went off to Le Mans. Again buqqer all connections.
It was only after I came home again and looked at the SFR 3G coverage I saw how absolutely pathetic and thin on the ground it was. Only large towns were covered.

So don't bother with SFR 3G.

Ray.

The orange France deal sounds good for smart phones or tethering but as addie has pointed out an as ray has mentioned with sfr 3g your relying on one provider. Either orange or sfr.

I'm assuming the orange France deal will only connect to orange signals and the sfr dongle will only pickup sfr?

Vodafone data traveller however uses any carrier it can pick up for access. Right now I'm connected to Bouygues but at the next aire it could be orange or sfr so your pretty much guaranteed a signal anywhere and as Addie points out it's eu wide, not just France.

It would he good if they upped the 25mb limit but to he honest in nearl four months I've never gone over it. I'm always on here with it!

VF data traveller sounded really good and I checked many of Addies post before i left but i don't get any VF at home so i binned it and thought i'd try with a wifi booster. I looked into UK orange data packages before i left and found nothing that matched DT by VF. I've got this (white) Orange france 3g dongle which works great but as Addie rightly said-I'm not just staying in france. Hey ho! if the business collapses while i'm away at least i can keep my memories. plus they can always call me on the phone, that seems to be working fine.

I have run my own business for ten years now and I know it's important to keep in touch. It's much easier now and services like DT have made a big difference. So much so that my answerphone message now tells customers and collegues to email me as it's easier and I'm always connected on the iPhone. Plus it means it doesn't cost me to keep checking answerphone messages.

The antenna has been superb for support as well if I need to connect remotely back to the uk. It's not often I have.to do this though anymore and if it was I think I would be investing in satellite which I guess would be tax detuctable anyway

Jim,

Just because you don't get Vodafone at home it seems a bit illogical to effectively write off what is currently the best option for mobile data in europe - especially if it keeps your business afloat. I've been away for six months and not once not had mobile reception. The mobile networks in Eastern Europe are much newer then ours and usually 3G rather then GPRS. I even was able to blog from the most northern tip of mainland Europe! I've maintained even my most pessimistic clients who said it 'wouldn't work' if I was in Europe because I can always get online and pull the reports they need for their meetings.

Vodafone do a little box called SureSignal which uses your home internet connection to boost your mobile telephone reception at home. I think they are under £50 on eBay?

I can't think of anything that would justify a Satellite System especially if you are using the internet for recreational use. There is always a local PAYG dongle option, we're just all waiting for a decent pan european option. Wifi might not be available where you park but a short trip down a busy street will soon see a signal you can park up and use.

Vodafone also do a great calls package called 'Passport' which let's you make or receive a call to/from the UK for a 75p connection charge for upto an hour. That's better than Skype for calling UK mobiles. I keep a PAYG back up phone for making shorter calls.

We have just returned from 6 weeks touring France and many sites had free wifi, usually near the reception with name and password from the office. Some sites do charge and it is not cheap.
While in UK if there is no wifi I have an App on my iPhone which turns it into a hotspot for my iPad or laptop. It is called MyWi. Works well.
