We're about to move to Virgin from Sky, we have 3 boxes, 2 Sky + 1 normal, I have 2 dishes, one 8 Llnb about 3 years old, and one 8 Lnb only 6 months old, currently the newer one is cable up for one box only.

Assuming absolute ignorance on my part of how to make it all work, what would be a the best use we could put them too, I could easily make use of the 2 Sky + boxes, with one in the lounge and one in the bedroom, I'm also sure I read somewhere that I could use one to play back recorded material in the MH sans disk and phone line, although none of the boxes have been connected to a phone line except for initial setup by Sky.

To use the recording and playback functions on a Sky+ box YOU MUST subscribe to Sky.

(unless you have a Pace 3100, in which case a bit of memory / software flashing can make them work without subscription)

Phone line connections are generally required for NEW Sky installations (for 12 months) and multiroom contracted equipment (for the duration of the multiroom contract) - and if you want to buy things online (from QVC or PPV)

So as you are cancelling Sky you will have no recording or playback functions on the Sky+ boxes, and no need for them to be connected to the phone line.

You can use all three to watch FreeSat from Sky. No need to retune anything or move the dishes. .Here is the channel line up.

All you need to do is call Sky and pay £15 (I think) for a free to air card to replace your sky viewing card. No monthly fees, and no telephone line required.

You will find it hard to find a reference to the card on the Sky website, and you can't order it online. But if you phone, they will sell you as many as you want.

As I thought, things are not so simple, I'll look into the free to air cards though.

I think you will find the free to air card from Sky is ONLY required for Channel 5 (no I have no idea why either!)

It might be worth whipping the card out of your current box to see what channels you can get without any card at all ??

You can have all the FTA channels using an old Sky box including Channel 5. But you have to manually tune it in like this...........

This is for channel 5 but I have the frequencies and symbol rates etc for the other ftv channels The way to do it as follows:•
Go to the 'Services' menu using the remote control and choose option 4 for System Setup then 4 again
for Add Channels.
Type in the frequency 10773 Change Symbol rate to 22 Change FEC to 516
Select 'Find Channels'. Select Five

Ray.

Yes, the above posts are correct, you can add 5, plus your local ITV station by using the add channels function and view them without the free to air sky card. You can also add your local BBC Radio station in a similar manner. Not too sure about the other 5 channels (5 USA, 5*) as I havent done the research to find the settings.

BUT all these added channels wont appear on the EPG, and its a pain the proverbial to see what is on these channels - to access them via the Services Menu means pushing four different buttons, some of them more than once. There is no way to scroll to them using the +/- button on the remote either.

There are also other channels that you cant access without the card. You probably never watch some of these channels (eg SonyTV), but there are others, most notably the HD channels from BBC, ITV, C4, & C5, that you might want to. (You get the "insert viewing card" prompt when the HD channel is selected from the EPG)

Far simpler to make one call and spend £15.

As I write this, I am sitting in front of a TV with an ex-Sky box that has had the free to air card removed........

A bit confusing as there is no such thing as a free to air card!!

YOu do not need ANY card to watch the free to air channels..as free to air means "available with no card and no subscription".

Perhaps you mean a"free to view" card...

Mrplodd wrote:

There are 4 advertising regions for Five...one is free to air (no card required) , 3 are free to view (card required).

Sometimes the free to air - non sky card - versions will not appear on 105 - thats when you have to manually add it to "other channels" ...although some Sky boxes will not allow you to access the "other channels" without a sky card!!!!

Currently NOT ALL ITV1 regions are free to air - about 6 of them are free to view and require a sky card (subscription or freesatfromsky ccard), but this may change once AStra 1N is in place and running (expected mid october), which is when it is thought that the "fives" will also become free to air....

Not all, if any, BBC local radios are available via satellite...cant see BBC Radio Humberside on satellite for example...or BBC Radio Sheffield, or BBC Radio West Midlands

Again, no such thing as a free to air card...you dont need any card for the free to air channels.

The free to view card / freesatfromsky card cost £25 from sky.
www.freesatfromsky.co.uk
call them up to order it.
pop the card in the box.
call them up to activate it.

If you cancel your sky subscription card, then they automatically becomes a "free to view / freesatfromsky" card...so no need to buy another card, unless you really want to...

the list posted above are all the free to air channels - ie those that can be seen with no card....

The free to view / freesatfromsky / ex subscription card allows the viewing of the "free to view" channels...those that require no subscription but do require a card.
Currently they are - about 6 ITV1 regions, 3 Fives, Five*, Five USA, Five HD, Pick TV, Sony TV, Motors TV, Viva TV and LFCTV.

Five* and Five USA will NOT appear in the Sky listings unless there is an active sky card in the slot...you can add them to other channel if you want (freq 12422 h 27 2/3), but you will need a card to view them and is there any point in adding them to other channel when they will be in the EPG anyway???

dbar wrote:

BBC1HD, BBCHD, C4HD and all but 1 ITV1HD region are free to air and require no sky card.
1 ITV1HD region and Five HD require a "free to view / freesatfromsky / ex sub card" to watch.
