Great thread.
The pressure cooker is a pretty good solution if gas supply isn't an issue but, for us, it usually is so Helen has been banging on recently for a slow cooker. Now it seems possible to use it other than when plugged into the mains it gives me the opportunity to gain much-needed Brownie points and accept the inevitable with a good grace.
As it happens the invertor has just given up the ghost so I am really onto a winner. Thanks guys.
David.
The hay box has to be the cheapest way of cooking on the move. It worked when I was a lass at Guide camp and works just as well today. Just a box with hay into which the hot pot of casserole or soup or porridge etc is placed, covered well and left to cook itself slowly. Just like a slow cooker but no additional power needed!
We used to make large quantities at Guide camp so used to use a tea chest packed with clean, dry hay. We used enormous billy cans to cook for so many, but I guess you could just scale it all down appropriately. It works by keeping the pot hot for the day so that everything cooks in the contained heat. Simples!
It would work with polystyrene worms instead of hay, but just be careful not to melt them against the pan! The important thing is to have a snugg fit for the pan.
Not another thread that PC 'glum' plodd has got his teeth into. Next he will be telling you that he has informed all his ex constable friends that there is a woman in a motorhome with a large amount of inflamable hay trying to cook a meal on the move which contravenes some obscure road traffic act. They will be able to up their arrest rate, in between trying to pass their new fitness tests which will reduce the numbers of those in blue by looking at the ones I see waddling about. Get a life. We know you were in the force but you don't seem to be able to lets us forget it.
