We went through a time when we hired out our pride and joy Motorhome. It was only a small one. A Toyota Newlander with a 1600cc engine. We lent it to 'friends' who wanted a cheap holiday. We helped them.
The eventual cost from income was more that lost by the repairs that we needed to do after each trip. Damaged interior fittings, eggs dropped and left (maggots galore), taps pulled of and just put back to look ok, so no water when we used it. Etc,etc, etc.
The comment that made us stop, after we had said please do not exceed 60mph. In discussions later, a hirer stated Liverpool to Thurso in one day. If you allow stops then 80mph on many occasions.
Oils and water never checked. They are of the opinion that you have done it and so they do not need to.
We had to replace with a new engine. Severe damage to steering. People go where they see adverts and believe that is where Motorhomes should be driven. Off the beaten track. You and we know they are not 'off roaders'.
These were people we worked with and trusted. Hiring to strangers???
Ours was a small vehicle, not sure what size is yours. I have seen many people drive who are not used to the 20'+ length of Motorhomes. Hitting kerbs, posts etc.
Our was a tale of woe.
On the plus side, I learned enough to be able to do interior conversion on 5 Motorhomes.
Don't forgert that money earned 'for hire or reward' is income and put the 40% away for tax. You may have to pay less, but you will have to fight for the lesser fee.
I didn't sleep well last night, and one reason was my post on this thread!
Along with everyone else, I was a doom and gloom merchant, when really I (we?) should all have been trying to answer your question. To be honest, I haven't got a clue if that is a good price for insurance.
Also, let me be the first to congratulate you on your enterprise and entreprenurial spirit. This country will need people who can see an opportunity (in this case, providing access to a high-cost item in a manner which is affordable whilst offering the potential to appreciate a different form of life/holiday, thus making the general public more receptive to the motorhoming fraternity) and who are prepared to risk their time and money in order to make a profit.
I'm sure you have considered all of the pitfalls to this method of using a vehicle and probably you see it as a simple business scheme, with the added bonus that you can make use of the asset when business is slack. I apologise for getting a bit precious about my "beloved".
