Has anyone tried a side loading motorbike trailer of the sort advertised here?

http://www.ebay.co.uk/itm/NEW-Side-Loading-Motorcycle-Motorbike-Scooter-Trailer-/290606913689?pt=UK_Motorcycle_ Parts&hash=item43a9859899

I am now considering using a bike trailer and it would clearly be helpful if it could be kept to about a 5 foot length as suggested in this ad.

Are there any obvious disadvantages to this type of trailer?

Thanks
Paul

I have sugested this product on a few occasions.

I have just sold an ERDE galvanised "proper" trailer They are about £450 new.

I like the idea of the shorter trailer and it has a good loading weight.

You must carry a spare wheel with the trailer.

It may be awkward to reverse, then I have seen some terrible caravan reversing.

Hi Paul and Dave I have this trailer for my PCX125 Scooter. Its easy to load up and tow, but because it has such a short length its a nightmare to reverse or I need a lot more practise. It also takes some time to find the best way to secure the scooter to the trailer with the rachet lines supplied, but a bit of trial and error has resolved that. One big critism is the Locking Triplelock Hitch great for security, but a bit of a nightmare when you are trying to get it onto your towbar as you have to have the key in the lock, whilst pulling the barrel of the lock outwards, whilst lowering the hitch onto the towbar. As I said its easy to load up and take down the scooter.

Regards

Barry

Having spent quite a bit of time looking at bike trailers (& towed many commercial trailers myself) my opinion on these would be somewhat negative;

-As stated any short trailer (hitch to axle) will be a nightmare to reverse, also tight forward turns 'could' be a fouling issue on a wide towing vehicle.

-Some long bikes, choppers etc on these side loaders, could be wider than the towing vehicle.

-All the weight is carried very high up over the axle, where almost all other bike trailers carry the weight a lot lower which I personally prefer. A high COG on any trailer does not tow as well as low COG, as will 'magnify wobble' of the high up load.

I think a lot depends on how critical/important the short length is to you. If it's for ferry shipping costs I can see the point. If its for storage purposes I would personally go for a folding trailer such as the Bikelug, or similar.

Bikelug have an offer on at the minute as it happens as well They regularly get a good rep on the bike forums I visit, and fly s/h on e bay if you want to sell one. I have no connection with them BTW.

If you want a really easy loading bike trailer I would look at the RoRo HERE http://www.roromotorcycletrailers.co.uk/rorotrailer.htm

Thanks very much guys, that's very helpful input. On balance I guess it's probably safest to go for a more conventional (maybe collapsible) trailer.

If Mr Armitage is reading, maybe it would be a great idea to fit sprung caster wheels and a rigid attachment to the tow ball

Then reversing would be no problem.

No. ezetow do not fit suspension to their product.

At least not from the pictures that I can see.
