Hi everyone..a quick question

I am looking to get a dongle for my netbook, I have tried the BT one and couldnt get a signal anywhere

so what I am looking for is one that works near York, Carnforth, North Yorkshire and Lancashire which are the most places we go to,

I dont want to be spending a fortune as it will only be used at weekends and sometimes not for a couple of months.

which network has the most coverage and definately not Vodafone as thats the network BT use and the only signal was in Somerset when my son borrowed it

Confused Confused

thanks Anne

I have found 3 to be pretty good in most areas with more 3G coverage than others I have tried, Alan.

Hi there

You can check the coverage in the areas if you have postcodes by using the following: broadband-coverage.uswitch.com

We have 3 which we use for mobile wifi at home and also when we go away - kills two birds with one stone as they say. Costs £15.98 per month for 5K usage which we get nowhere near using.

Have used it at Hawes (good), Bolton Abbey (no signal) Melrose (no signal) Keswick (good) Cairngorms (good).

York I am sure should be fine with any provider but its when you get out into the sticks that the problems arise.

With 3 we are on the very edge of its coverage at home so the dongle has to be left in an upstairs bedroom. It works most of the time but sometimes it does drop the connection.

Am considering changing to Orange as that seems to have more coverage at home but have not checked nationally.

Hope this helps.

Milly

Sorry to muddy the waters, but I've got a 3 and a Vodafone - and have found the Vodafone better for coverage. (It's also an old-style one where the credit runs on beyond 28 days, but that's another matter.)

the BT use Vodafone and I couldnt get a signal near York, Carnforth most of the places near where I live and even at home...BT suggested I went outside onto the pavement and I would get a signal there...hang on I'll just drag my armchair outside Laughing Laughing

I will take all onboard before I make up my mind

thanks all

We have a 3 mifi which we are very pleased with.
We used it on our 6 week travels around the coast from mid Norfolk to mid Wales, a different CL each night, and only twice could we not get a signal.
If the signal is poor or non existent we fasten the mifi to a very tall flagpole which usually gives us HSDPA .

I've had a t-mobile wi-fi dongle for a few years now and have found it to have very good coverage, even on some fairly remote CL/CS sites. They also gave me free t-mobile wi-fi hotspot access which doesn't come off your monthly mb allowance. If you are going abroad you can add a Euro Broadband Booster bundle of a suitable size at reasonable cost, I found this also gave good coverage whilst in rural France earlier in the year.

Orange and t-mobile have combined, they already share phone masts on the mobile voice network but not 3G yet. According to the Orange website this is due to happen 'later on this year', so this will extend the coverage further.

Oh, and I called them a couple of months ago and said I was thinking of leaving and got the monthly charge reduce by a fiver! Cool
