Olley

I can't offer you advice on the best for your needs but what I will say is that in technology terms cameras change at an alarming rate.
The specs go up almost as fast as the prices seem to go down.

If your daughter goes to uni in September then almost certainly the best camera today will not be the best in September.

As has been said look at dpreview and perhaps look at those cameras which have the spec you need but are now a few months old and are still selling even though they have been overtaken by the new 'alll singing all dancing model'. You also want something that'd pretty rugged as although it might not get misused it almost certainly will be well used.
Also take weight into consideration, storage medium and battery life.

It also might be worth talking to one of the photography specialist shops and looking at something pre-owned and which they guarantee.

When we wanted a good, inexpensive "point and shoot" we researched some of the above and eventually came up with a short list. We saw a very lightly used Nikon Coolpix 885 on ebay and bought it for about Ģ50, and when it arrived it was like new, really good buy. Just thinking that there are some bargains to be had, if you are careful, and you can usually get last years flavour of the month for a fraction of the price of a new one from the shops.

Maybe worth some investigation?

Thanks guys and guy'eses she needs the camera soon, as all the pictures go into her portfolio, so waitings not an option.

She is really keen on this photography lark, took nearly 1500 pics on last years 4 week holiday Shocked with her little digital.

Just had a look at cameras.co.uk and the olympus SP-350 seems like a good one, I will let her have a look and see what she thinks.

Thanks again

Olley

It does look like a good solution Olley - reasonable price (Ģ240) but with 8meg pixels and a lot of control.

Don't forget the extra memory card for all those snaps! Oh, and Photoshop CS2. And a printer. And a high spec p.c. ... . And a graphics tablet ...

My daughter's in her final year doing the same degree at DMU, so I've got the T shirt!

Harry

Hi Harry she's already got the printer, pc and elements2, but know doubt they will all need upgrading before she goes to uni. Rolling Eyes We got her a digital camera last year after the cost of developing 35mm (she's got my olympus and brothers canon SLR's) got out of hand. Crying or Very sad

What does she think of DMU? as my daughters still undecided as to which one to go to. (if they will have her) I think it's De montford or southampton that are the favorites at the moment.

It's like saying to a cook which oven bakes the best cake!

However digital a SLR say secondhand Canon 300d Ģ350

Traditional film, still Canon SLR just make sure lens are interchangeable with Canon digital.

Camera in all probability is not the important thing, you can take pictures with a cardboard box with a pinhole in one end and piece of film at other end.

My advise leave it till course starts, so many types cameras from APS to 10x8 plate.

Hi Olley

Have a look at the Panasonic FZ20 or FZ30.

I have a FZ 20 which is fantastic. It has equiv zoom lens of 400mm and image stabilisation.

The FZ30 has the option to shoot at RAW if she needs it.
Have a look at my gallery to see what it can do.

If you want anymore info pm me... It is a great camera that feels like a camera...
