A great first time experience despite bad service and what I think was sharp practice from the hiring company.

We are definitely hooked on motorhomeing now and are thinking about our first investment.

It was simple little touches that made the experience for me such as being able to stop and get the kettle on, rotating seats, heating, bathroom facilities etc. The actual itinerary (in part suggested here) wasn't bad either Very Happy

The downside was the hiring company. In my opinion they were less than honest about the insurance policy and the inexplicable "admin" charges for everything.

What started as a relatively decent hire of a two birth van @£530.00 for 6 nights turned out to be over £850.00 because of IPT CWD Insurance surcharge dog cleaning costs £5 per day and other associated administration charges averageing about £25per item.

It turned out that the hiring company don’t own the van, they just broker with the owner, so when on day one we discovered there wasn’t any gas they blamed each other and we ended up freezing on the first night and forking out £20 for gas on day two.

Still despite all of the hassle it was a really enjoyable trip and I want to thank you all for your good advice.

I favour the Isle Whiskies myself (nice and peaty)
Very Happy

Good to hear you had a great time despite the hire company.

And freezing at night is never a bad thing - at least you could cuddle together (dog and all) Wink Wink

Glad you had a good time and that the lack of clarity about the hire hasn't put you off the idea of a motorhome.

Hi and welcome.
If you do decide to take the plunge I hope you get something you really like. Dont be afriad to travel to a decent dealer to get the after sales. I actually went up to Yorshire to buy my van despite living near brum. I wouldnt touch the well known dealer in the midlands/black country with a barge pole.

Dont be put off by the little things that you have to learn from experience. They all add to the memories...and we all have experience things like gas running out at 2am etc. There always a way round these things.

You are right in that the arrival procedure is so simple in a motorhome. Its ne of the reason i didnt want a caravan. I couldnt so with all that levelling and putting up awnings and getting water etc.. but i respect that caravanners dont mind that much.

Anyway hope you get something sorted soon.
Phill
