Hi Bob

You don't need a virus protection system for Mac because there are no Apple viruses. And there is a reason for that.

Apple users wouldn't have the inclination to write a virus/malware program. They are too busy looking at themselves in the mirror mouthing the words "Hi, I am an apple user" or Hi I am one of the enlightened ones" or I am a self righteous supercilious twit" "I am superior to those awful boring depressing, unfortunate PC people

Apple users are the Stepford wives of the computer industry - basically blonde, beautifully dressed and coiffed and primped - but in the end they are just full of their own poop.

Hope all is well with you Bob and say hello to the beautiful Barbara

Best

Hi

Well if you ignore the comments from Windows users the real reasons are partially technical and partially practical.

The technical reason is that Mac operating systems are based on Unix a business operating system which is considerably more robust. This makes the whole operation of writing a virus more difficult.

A Windows based machine also has the disadvantage in so far that originally the IBM PC was designed as an "open" system so basically IBM made the hardware and then allowed other people to make additional hardware (hard disks, video cards etc) and the operating system was designed in the same way. Apple have always kept a tight reign on both the hardware (until recently when they went to Intel) and the software. OS X the operating system was a complete re-write and many issues were plugged. This unfortunately is not the case with Windows as it needs to keep backwards compatibility with previous systems

The practical reason is that Windows is so full of holes and that 90% of the worlds computers are windows based then if you are going to spend time trying to write a virus which would you choose?

A simple illustration - 10 houses in a street, 9 have all of the front doors open one is closed. When the burglar walks up to each house and looks in some are occupied, some are not and the one that has the front door closed is ignored in favour of the richer pickings elsewhere.

No doubt one day a virus, key-logger, trojan etc will be written for the Mac, either by some kid or by the AV firms themselves (oop's conspiracy theory that the original viruses came from the AV software companies) and then Mac users will have to go down the same route. But until then, a Mac users best protection is Windows!

Cheers

Michael

Hi guys, Apple do not release the basic code for any of products, so a Mac since its inception has NEVER had a virus attack. However, (always a but) you can download a virus and pass on a PC virus from bogus sites (much like a petrol engine won't run on neat diesel). Have had various Macs, ipod, iphone and an ipad2 since 1986 and ever had or passed on a virus or trojan. Happy and safe surfing.
