Can anyone help me. We are looking at getting a wide angle lens for our Canon primarily to take photos at our daughters wedding in March. Looking at the cost of them though, we are considering trying one of the 'screw on convertors'. Does anyone have any experience of these and are they a waste of time & money? She is getting married abroad so relying on a photographer for reasonabl pics is not an option!
Thanks in advance.
Lesley

How wide do you want to go? There should be plenty of reasonably priced lenses around that will go down to 18mm. This will fit in loads of people (I use one to take pictures of school groups)

Below that you're looking at fish eye types and they are pricey and will distort your photos (not required for a wedding unless you put unwanted guests on the edges of the frame).
Converters are fine, but for weddings I would have thought a decent 18mm - 70mm lens from the likes of Sigma should do the job and not be costly compared to a pro photographer.

We want to be able to get close enough to get 20 people in the frame without them looking like ants!
We do have an 18mm, I will start using the canon again to get a feel for the 18mm and what it can do.
Thanks

Daughters wedding.

Get a proffesional. Let someone else use your camera.

Thats what I did when KP married a few years ago.

Obtain piccies from relatives who use digital cameras.
you will be amazed how many you will colect.

You will be too busy to be a photographer.

I don't think you need to worry about a wide enough lens, on a 450D the resolution should be high enough for you to crop photos if necessary. A wide angle / fish eye is only used for a couple of shots in a wedding photographers inventory, ideally you'll also have a step ladder Wink

You want high appature long range lens so you can get the 'subject in focus, background blurred' photos for which you have to stand a long way back.

I did a lot of shots with a Sigma 30mm fixed lens f1.4, some fantastic shots without having to be too close.

Think I will have to pass on the step ladder, not sure the airline will allow it!!
I am taking my tripod though so should be able to set that up a bit taller than me Smile I have got the remote as well so we can get some of us all.
Failing that lots of Americans go on their hols to the Dom Rep, might just grab the tallest one and shout help! Laughing
I am glad I asked the question now though as we have been trawling flea bay and second hand camera shops for a reasonable priced wide angle and not found one.
Looks like we don't really need one. Time to put my compact camera away and get the canon out again.
Thanks for your help

You might want to consider renting a lens......I use a Canon 24-105mm f4 lens for most wedding shots. At least you have f4 available through out the zoom range so the background should be out of focus and bring your groups into focus and sharp. For close up work, I use a Sigma 24-70mm f2.8 which is superb for low light shots and "blurring" the background and sharpening the subject focus.

If you need pointing in the right direction to rent, drop me a pm and will give you a couple of names.

I have been photographing weddings since the late 70s Lesley, its my job.

A friend has a 450d and its a cracking lens. He has just purchased a sigma 18-200 which looks superb and he only paid £200 for it.

Where are you going for the wedding

The 24X 105 L lens is the one I take everywhere including a wedding recently and the photo's are fantastic, but its a very expensive Lens

It all depends on the quality you settle for, the Canon eos range is very good but the lens makes the big difference.

But that is based on a misconception - if the people fill the frame from side to side they will be the same relative size whatever length lens you use.

The length of lens you use is only constrained by either "how close" or "how far" away you can stand.

As said the disadvantage of a really wide angle lens is that the people in the middle of the frame will appear slightly bigger than those on the edge - the "fish-eye" effect.

I have a 12-24mm Sigma and I could get a group of 20 people in two rows all in from about 10 feet away, but I wouldn't want to do that for a wedding group picture.

What is the focal length of the standard lens you have with the 450D? I assume it's a zoom of some type.

Sorry just read it again and see you have an 18mm and that is about as wide as I'd want to go to avoid distortion around the edges of the frame.
