Absolutely, this is one of the reasons for f/8, great for "family" type shots. Not only is it usually a sweet spot for lenses, it'll have a great dof for this type of shot.. If you are doing close up portraits you may want better Bokeh (blurry background) by reducing the f/stop down which opens up the aperture.
