I have managed to update without losing itunes or apps.
I don't know of any way of backing up itunes other than through itunes itself.
However I am yet to work out the benefits. I thought I would be able to stream my photos etc to my pc, but this won't work!
More than likely it is me doing something wrong through icloud.

1. The ability to add your own ringtones and Text tones.
2. The ability to have any/each contact his/her own ring/text tone
3. When on silent the ability to make camera light flash
4. as said imessage which is free messaging to any iphone users
5. the message center
6. icloud
7. find my friend, which enables you to see where your friends are.
8. you can even design/add your own Vibrate sequence to any contact.
And STILL finding new things.
