I'm on the hunt for a phone.

My current ("vintage wind-up model") is ready for the knackers yard.

What I know about mobiles just isn't worth knowing so I'm looking for you knowledgeable people out there to point me in the right direction.

All I want is:

PAYG
A numeric keypad
A decent camera - ideally 5mp
Uncomplicated internet access.

Budget up to £150ish

That's it - I don't want video, music, FM, GPS, FB, Twits or any other clever gizmos.

I'm drowning in reviews that leave me feeling depressed and lost.

Please flood me with suggestions.

Smile

No idea about the phone but T-mobile do good European travel internet packages for PAYG and contract phones.

T-Mobile Travel Boosters

We used them this year on our contract phones and £10 (50Mb) just about lasted two weeks of pretty heavy internet use. If you are a bit more careful it would last longer obviously. No chance of over spending either as once the Mb's you have bought runs out the internet packs up. You just buy more then with a text.

Some phones allow you to "tether" a laptop to them so you use the phone as an internet hotspot and use the laptop to access the web. Gives you a bigger screen and full keyboard. My wifes HTC Wildfire does that but has a touchscreen keyboard.

Obviously a phone with Wifi would be a good bet as well. They have a few with keyboards on the website. Ring them up you can probably push a deal, that's what we did.

You probably know a lot of this anyway. Good luck it's a minefield.

Hi,
Personally I use a Galaxy S 2, nice thing about it is that it can be set up for tethering very quickly IE used as an internet hub.

I also use a Galaxy tab now instead of the laptop, so does the missus! we can both connect to the phone, with the unlimited data pacakage we always have internet

Be careful some providers want to charge you extra for tethering, Apple Iphone being one of the culprits

regards
Mike and June

I have just got a cheap new Sony phone but they keep changing the lay out so having a few issues with txt'ing no doubt I will get used to it, I bought the wife a HTC desire touchscreen which she can use and seems to get on well with, I did try the Xperia X10 but the screen drove me nuts so for mobile internet out in the m/h I have a Samsung Galaxy Tab great bit of kit tho a bit big to put in your pocket, I have installed all my favorite albums and my lad downloaded a load of films on to it for while I was in hospital.

Mobile phone choice is so vast and it really does depend on what you want your phone to do. I have a HTC Desire. I have resisted getting one for years and relied on my old windows smart phone for the past 6 years. A colleague at work was selling his and so I purchased it from him. I was bitten immediately. Besides the phone which I use infrequently I mainly use the GPS for geocaching. This requires a link to the Internet. I mainly link to the work or home wifi and download the cache details but i can download them using the mobile Internet while I am out. Geo caching applications often require to download maps and these can be quite large. When I first started using the phone I had my old orange PAYG sim and burnt off the remaining £5.00 credit in a couple of minutes. A friend introduced me to giffgaff a new PAYG service which gave me unlimited Internet for £10.00 a month. I have been using Giffgaff for a month now and have had no problems with my £10.00 worth of Internet and 250 minutes of calls and unlimited sms messages.

The HTC Desire is an Android phone . Android being the computer operating system that it uses. so it is doing a lot more that making phone calls. The down side of these phones is the battery life. My battery is second hand and with the GPS on I can drain the battery in a few hours. I am planning on purchasing a new battery but the battery life will still be only a couple of days between full recharges. Ok if you have a ready power source available but something you may want to take into consideration.

The other main factor with mobile phones is how much you pay for your service. You need to think what your usage is. With my Giff gaff I only plan to use this in the UK and that will cost me £10 for one month 250 minutes and unlimited sms and unlimited Internet. If I go abroad and want to use my phone I would need to get another plan or purchase another sim that gives me what I want for the country that I am traveling in. Be careful with Internet access as this is sometimes very costly especially if you are using a UK Plan in another country.

Another big factor is wether to go PAYG or take out a contract with a company. again swings and roundabouts. If you are a light phone user there are some deals around as low as £10.00 a month which will offer you a free phone. Downside of these contracts are that they tend to be 2 year contracts. If you are going down the PAYG route you can switch your provider when ever you want to. You will have to purchase your own phone.

Hope these ramblings prove of some help to you here are a few links to get you going.

Geocaching is great fun you can find out more details here: Geocaching

You can get giffgaff sims from here: giffgaff

If you are a Virgin media customer they do deals on the Blackberry for pay monthly Virgin Mobile

Information on HTC Smartphone can be viewed here:
HTC

I would have a look at ebay and get yourself a PAYG Sim. If you do this your phone will need to be unlocked. You can get someone to do this for you or you may be able to do it your self checkout the giffgaff unlockapedia. Ulockapedia

Hi Tony

Doubt if I can help you at all.

Mrs Zeb and I have a phone each. They cost 20 quid apiece and are brilliant at making phone calls!

Well, they are called mobile phones after all! Rolling Eyes Laughing

Got to go . . . she wants me to turn the mangle while she feeds the washing through! Surprised

Best advice would be to go to a Phone shop and look around and ask questions, Any advice you get on here will be because the poster will advise because He/She has the particular type they are recommending, Now that phone might be brilliant for them, But it might be crap for you, Make a list of what you would like it to do and go and ask a phone company.

Very Happy Very Happy
