A phone is a phone is a phone, I make phone calls end of.
Just replaced my Nokia for a brand new one same model as the old one.. Well the old one was squashed banana shaped when the launching tractor ran over it down at the boat yard... Luckily It was insured free with gadget insurance that comes with a Barclays Bank package.. Reminds me they also do travel insurance with the package, better check if it covers us for four months .. see there is always a happy ending you will soon not have to put up with my drivel until next April
ray.

House full of mobiles here! Wife, sons, son's girlfiends, me and even my mates sometimes. Between us we have used Blackberries, Samsung, Iphones, Nokia... the lot.
Here's my view -
1. Blackberry. Hated it. So did son number two. Good if you have got eyes like a sh*t house rat and fingers like a 7 year old Chinese pianist.
2. Pay as you go - really expensive and always a possibility of running out. I pay £15 a month for my phone with Virgin. That's £3.90 a week. Is there any point in getting any cheaper?
3. The Iphone. Nice bit of kit. Feels great. Dead easy to use. The only prob is you have to pay for a lot of the good applications on it (good old Apple hey). Unless you can jail break it. This is quite easy to do - just Google 'Red Snow' and it means you can download hundreds of free apps but it invalidates your warranty. There are loads of good deals out on the Iphone 3gs now the new Iphone 4 has come out and gtheyre getting rid. (Always choose the 3gs over the 3 as reception is much better)
4. The Samsung
I have the Galaxy for £15 a month. It's not a bad phone but kicking myself for not getting the Galaxy 3 S2 as my mate has it and it is MUCH better. Trust me when I say 1 week into having a big touch screen phone you will never go back to a keypad. The On screen keys are about 4 times the size is the reason why and texting for people like me with axe murderers hands is actually easy now.
Like I said Kicking myself for not paying the extra tenner a month and getting the Galaxy S2 which my mate has - it's brilliant. Feels good, solid build, looks good, BIG HD screen, great camera and video cam, good battery life and getting on the web on it is dead easy.
Here's the phone at Tesco £24 a month. Six quid a week for a bit of kit like this to include air time and Internet time is incredible.
Seriously though. I know you said you wanted something basic (ish) but if you travel Europe a lot I would strongly consider a smart phone with Vodafone and a big enough screen to browse the Internet. Then you can get Vodafone Data Traveller for a tenner a month and have the internet everyday anywhere in Europe which can be pretty useful when you don't plan or need help on here.
I have an iPhone and its as overrated as Champagne and Anal Sex but it came into its own this year abroad.
I suspect there will be some cheap 3GS ones as mentioned floating around as the Apple Droolers will see them as inferior now and will probably just bin them but the camera is crap. Does feel pretty Barry proof though.

If it's a reliable workhorse of a mobile phone you're after then, under normal circumstances, I'd recommend the Sony Ericsson C902 Cybershot. It fits the budget and does what it says on the box.
H-o-w-e-v-e-r.....for reasons best known to themselves, they've discontinued the model! Why do they do that??! My poor battered phone could do with replacing....ideally 'like for like' as I've found it to be very user friendly and resilient....but unfortunately the trend seems to favour the touchscreen models. Having tried a friend's Sony Ericsson Xperia, I realise 'touchscreen' is not for me. It's way too sensitive to touch....is unnecessarily complicated with 'apps' & gagetry....and the QWERTY keyboard takes two hands to write a text (one to hold the phone....one to type).....as opposed to one-handed with a compact, numeric phone/keyboard. Added to which, unless one is extremely nimble and dexterous...it's impossible to hit the touchscreen letters/numbers singularly....which makes texting extreeeeemely fustrating!
Noooo.....I'm turning into Catweazle!
I've looked on Amazon and found that there ARE some 'new' C902 handsets available....but I'm reluctant to purchase one unseen. I much prefer buying from a reputable high street outlet where one has the opportunity to return faulty goods without hassle.
Good luck with your quest! I hope you find what you're looking for.....I'll be interested to know what you end up with.
Cathy Catweazle! x

I'm looking too but will probably plump for a Sumsung Galaxy Mini. £89.99 PAYG in o2 but £125 in Vodafone and up to £150 elsewhere so it's a good price. It has a fat fingered f'r screen so is good for mine. I liked the o2 tariffs, bung £10.50 on you credit and they take it off and give you 100 minutes and 500 texts which is plenty for me. The packages seem very flexible on paper. They have bolt on's for abroad and internet at similar prices to Vodafone.
I'm currently on a contract with T-Mobile (ends 26th Nov) and wouldn't recommend them. I get a very limited service at home and get cut off a lot so if you are considering them you should also consider a pigeon, they're cheaper, more reliable, faster and give you less sh*t. Biggest problem with T-Mobile was in Germany this year (I know they're a German company) when we were travelling with friends (I bought them on e-bay) three of the four phones were T-Mobile and they all crashed at the same time none of us had text messaging for over two weeks. We were all using my wife's phone to send messages.
I currently have a Samsung Tocco lite which has been a great phone no probs.
I don't use the net on the mobile as I panic when I see 'Google' come up on the screen in case of big bills, well I'm Scottish.
