Hi, i have worked out that an 80w solar panel would suit our needs.
Now the question is which panel and at what price.
It was not my intention to spend a fortune to keep the batteries charged, but as the prices vary so much, i am not sure that the old saying, you get what you pay for, applies.
If anybody out there has any experience of the cheaper roof mounted solar panels, i would appreciate as much feedback as possible.
Hi I put a Maplins 60 watt on ours at £200 approx, it works OK for us, 2 of us in a 6 berth, take a look on their website.
It's an Amorphous panel so works well in low light, or better anyway, but it suits our needs.
Just read up on the past threads here in the solar section.
You can definatly get an 80w panel DIY fitted for under £200..
Mine was a cheapy off ebay, 18 months old and has been fine..
Several people I know have bought and fitted the same thing..

hi doey . buying a solar panel is like everything else in life you buy something and you say to yourself i wish i had bought a larger one . we bought a camos dome go's to Spain no signal buys a 85watt solar panel NOT big enough . using a solar panel in England you will not get much going into the batteries any way as a mater of fact i have been doing a test on my batteries today and in a cloudy day my 130watt is only putting out 3amps . i bought mine from i think stone-wind-& solar £385 per kit.they are so easy to install .jud P.S if you want the address i will look it up
The German seller EBAY at £119 plus £8 p&p is fine and usually deliver within the week.
The Newcastle seller is cheap but I sent 2 panels back due to poor quality, refunded in full but a lot of time wasted.
I fit panels but currently working 12 hr days right through on Guernsey in my main trade as Electrician. Fitting out WH Smiths new Flying Pigeon enterprise.
These are the EBAY £148.70 panels I fitted for "Mikkidee"
Very good quality and 10mm shorter than usual 80 watt units if stuck for space

Could this be because the battery is well charged all ready? The regulator will cut the current (to zero if necessary) to prevent overcharging. To get a proper test you need to put some load on the system and see what happens when the panel recharges the battery.
My home panels are giving 900W at the moment. Only 25% of their maximum but it shows that you can get solar panels to work in UK.
I have found since installing a 140W panel that I need to top up with distilled water more often.

I have just fitted one of these above panels this morning to my mates Van and we were both very happy with the panel (I am also fitting another one of these to my own Van). Though we got them at the higher price prior to his price drop.
I also got 2 of these regulators (pictured below) to try out, as I love anything "gadgetty", and we were both again impressed with it. It displays the Panel Voltage, Battery Voltage, Amps going in / out, SOC (State Of Charge), temperature etc. Very Happy with it (though the screen is a little on the flimsy side, we have got a fix for this from my mates sign company who are going to make us a couple of little perspex screen covers for them).
