Very suprised to find that free wifi, which we take for granted in UK and France, is not available in German McDonalds. We tried three and in each case you needed a mobile phone with a german phone number to receive a PIN number to use the service at any given time.

Has anyone found a way around this?

However, contrary to other reports, we did find a number of unsecured wifi points we could use for free - often hotels.

Can't be bothered with all this WiFi nonsense, just get internet by satelite and never have any problems regardless of where I am Smile

Yes, I agree. No, I haven't found a way round it.

Hi.

We ended up just using the stellplatz that did have WiFi. Few and far between. No way round it. It is free in Spain as well.

The Germans like to pay over the odds for everything. €0.50 for a wee.

I did talk to a friendly McD employee about this and if my limited knowledge of German and his of English matched the problem is that it's illegal to offer open wifi to anybody in Germany. The users must be registered. This is because they think an open wifi is used for criminal activities.

The info from the last two posts, re the legality of an open WiFi in Germany seem to be incompatible.

I think you have to legaly register in Italy as well.

We found plenty of unsecured systems in both Germany and Italy though using the faculty x antenna and where that didn't work we used the Vodafone data traveller via my phone at £10 a month.

We have been away 4 months now and had the Internet every day for a total cost of £40. No need for satellte systems and I think in the next year or so roaming charges will collapse anyway.

Hi,

it is not exactly illegal in Germany, but: If somebody in Germany provides uncontrolled Internet access and somebody uses this access for illegal activities, for instance download of copyright-protected content, then not only the perpetrator but also the provider of the network access, in this case McD, can be held responsible.

Best Regards,
Gerhard

So how exactly does forcing you to have a German mobile phone to obtain a login password help?
