Looking for a bit of advice please. I had an accident with my 3 year old Macbook Air which will cost £450 to repair. My insurance company has paid for the repair - cheque in bank. My dilemma is, should I get it repaired or use the money to buy a new one.
The old one was ok but a new one is very much faster and has much more memory.
If I do get a new one what should I do with the old one?

Hi Fireball

Purely a personal opinion, but I think you can do just as you like with the money.

As far as the insurance company is concerned, they have paid out an agreed sum of money so that you may still have a working computer.

I doubt if they will have the slightest interest how you spend it, because if you buy a new one - the old one is still busted and will have to be repaired (if you decide to) at your expense, not theirs.

They will not have lost anything or been legally or morally swindled in any way . . . . that's how I would see it, but I'm no sort of expert. Wink

Sell the old one on eBay in its current faulty state with detailed information about the fault, its occurances and the diagnosis for the repair to make good.

Lots of companies source products on eBay to repair and sell as reconditioned.

I sold a 8 year old Sony laptop which was well and truly knackered and described as such - worn keys, plastics cracked, battery dead, dead pixels, mouse faulty for £100 in January, buyer was happy and I would imagine a Macbook would get 5x that.

Well, I'd never have thought of e bay. Thanks for that idea, Addie. My laptop died just 3 days before the start of our big trip and since it has data on it from work I have kept it and not known what to do to dispose of it.

On e bay there are people bidding on defunct laptops with no hard drives present - amazing! Am I right in thinking I can just remove my hard drive and get a few quid for the rest?

Lesley

Hi Lesley,

Yes - take your hard drive out (if it contains sensitive info etc) and put the model name / number and the words "spares/repairs/faulty" in the title so it comes up on the searches of people looking for such machines. 99p start sit back and watch the bids roll in Smile

Definately sell the broken one. You will be amazed what people will pay for broken technology and I imagine Macs which for reasons beyond my comprehension will be even more desirable. Even if they don't fix it they can pose with it as people now appear to want to do.

Seriously though as with the previous posters experience I sold a completely wrecked 3 yr old Toshiba laptop. Smashed screen and completely battered earlier this year for over £100! I've done it a few times fr pocket money. I work in IT (hopefully not for much longer) and frequently get rid of junk for silly money.

Barry,

did you put a specific high start price or did you let it auction from 99p?

Colin

PS - I ask because I have a few oldish laptops and desktops from my (now closed) business with cleaned harddrives and OS reinstalled and updated.
