I hoped I had saved on information from my Acer computer to an external drive. The file labeled 'Contacts' (all my email addresses) are shown as page squares with coloured bits on each and when I click on any they give me the name followed by 'Contact' message from windows tells me it cannot open this because it does not no which file name to use. Anyone done this - saving computer info for transfer to new computer.

I used MailStore Home when I had problems converting email files to transfer to a newer version of Outlook on my new computer. Worked a treat.

Downloaded a free version..google the name.

I have looked up Mailstore Home but can only see a 30 day trial and then cannot be sure it will gel with my 'Contact' Files. Of course I can go on line to my iSP and go through and make a note of my contacts. Am writing them in a book from now on so I have a back up.

Probably the key question is what email software were you using on your Acer and how did you save the contacts file?
Next question is what email software are you using on your new computer?

Even if you have to write everything down with a pen, you are better off than me. My laptop contracted hypothermia suddenly (froze and then died). I cannot get it back and have lost a lot of information.

I now have a new netbook with Windows 7 and I am trying to get to grips with a new operating system and also build up the mine of info I had on the old laptop. I am afraid that I will not be answering some technical questions for a while.

Hi,

In Windows Live, Hotmail, there is an option to export your contacts to a .CSV file.

A simple way to save them is to send an email to yourself and CC all of your contacts. Might annoy them but you would have an email with all of your contacts saved on it.

It was pointed out to me that all my emails in and out were on the Site of my isp. So all is not lost. If I deleted all my emails in Outlookk Express or the later Windows Mail with vista, they will still be recorded on the isp website?

Assuming that by "isp" you mean that you have a webmail account, then it depends upon the settings in your webmail account. For example, I use googlemail (Virgin is the same) and there is a setting for "When messages are accessed with POP". I can leave them on the webserver or delete them or archive them. You can quickly find out by logging on to your webmail account and seeing if your emails are there.

To view your contacts in the "saved" file on the external drive I think you have to import them back into you email program - I'm not sure you can just view them in the saved file.

As for the "Frozen" computer have you tried taking the hard drive out putting it into a caddy and attaching it as an external drive. If it is only the computer that has gone kaput, the drive may still be OK and quite readable.
