Even if you have to write everything down with a pen, you are better off than me. My laptop contracted hypothermia suddenly (froze and then died). I cannot get it back and have lost a lot of information.

I now have a new netbook with Windows 7 and I am trying to get to grips with a new operating system and also build up the mine of info I had on the old laptop. I am afraid that I will not be answering some technical questions for a while.

747,
What part of your laptop died? If the hard disk is OK, you can remove the disk and access it from another computer so you might recover your data. I've done this a couple of times with different computers.

I hoped I had saved on information from my Acer computer to an external drive. The file labeled 'Contacts' (all my email addresses) are shown as page squares with coloured bits on each and when I click on any they give me the name followed by 'Contact' message from windows tells me it cannot open this because it does not no which file name to use. Anyone done this - saving computer info for transfer to new computer.

Ambegayo,
If you still have the Acer in working order you should be able to import the address book data into the new machine. I believe help files in the new computer might tell you the detail.

As for the "Frozen" computer have you tried taking the hard drive out putting it into a caddy and attaching it as an external drive. If it is only the computer that has gone kaput, the drive may still be OK and quite readable.

Hi Stanner,

I could not get it back with the recovery disk and got a message about corrupted files. Thanks for the suggestion, I will look into that possibility. It would be handy to get the old one working again once any info has been retrieved.
