Hi, I hope people don't mind my first post being a question and not an introduction. We are new to MH's and bought our first one 6 months ago, A Duetto Autosleeper. We bought from a dealer so where expecting to pay more than private but wanted a little piece of mind, Warranty etc. We have now decided to get a slightly larger coachbuilt instead. We went back to same dealer to see what would now suitable and find out how much we would get back in PX. We were a little surprised to find out that we would only get back 2/3 of what we paid 6 months earlier. I know that dealers have to make a profit but my question is, How much depreciation do people think is acceptable?
Without the numbers my comment is:-
If you were selling privately(now) the price would be about midway between your paid price and the current dealers offer.
Possibly a little more?

I try and state simple facts in a nice way.
Give a few more details, like how old the van is, what you paid for it (if you don't mind saying), the trade in offer, the year and windscreen price of the new one you are considering etc..
It seems a bit stingy to me at first sight, but these things are not always as straightforward as they appear, and without detailed information it's hard to judge. Generally speaking the crucial figure is the difference in price . . . i.e. what you have to pay to change vans, and dealers have different ways of arriving at that figure.
It might be worth trying a couple more local dealers - but don't be tempted by a cracking good offer from a dealer in Scapa Flow . There's a strong chance the van (any van) will have to go back for something to be fixed or added, and travelling distance is a big consideration. Or should be . . . but some folk don't consider it and live to wish they had.
Add to that the fact you bought in 'high' season and are looking to trade in during 'low' season this will not work in your favour in terms of value as your vehicle will come into stock and needs to have a good enough margin to potentially be sat until next year.
You do not have to sell it to the dealer, personally I don't understand someone at least not having a punt at selling privately. eBay classified, £15 listing and we've sold two vans for the asking within 48hrs.
The question is not of 'depreciation' but of the 'dealer premium' you paid which seems to be astronomical on some older vehicles.
You bought in the spring, best time. You are trying to sell back in the autumn, worst time. The dealer will have made a good profit out of the sale, so that's lost.
Probably best to wait till next spring then try again with a part ex price, or sell privately.
Thank you everyone for your replies, We knew we would have to take a punt on the price due to selling at this time of year. We are going to advertise privately and see how we get on but may just pop it in the garage and wait for the spring!!
One other point that could work in your favour is, the MH that you are thinking of purchasing in part exchange, how long have they had it on their books, or are they in fact selling on a commission basis on behalf of an owner. If you are trading up, then try and negotiate a price which is going to be suitable to both of you, dealers, although they have to make a living, they also realise that sometimes it is better to "move stock on". Obviously, if you wait until the Spring, then any dealer is not going to be too forthcoming in giving you a bargain price.
We will be trading up Jenny but as we have found out we will be in a better position with cash!!! Thanks for all the replies. It's been a steep learning curve Maybe should have kept with the dome tent.

If it's any consolation, you are by no means unique!
There are loads of posts on here from members who have made exactly the same mistake and had to change their van - some of them several times before they were fully satisfied.
There is no shortcut to first hand experience I fear. All the advice you get on MHF and elsewhere is just that - advice. Only you and Mrs Klunker can finally decide what suits you . . . and often the only way to do that is the hard way.
As for the dome tent - why not make it into a fancy bonnet for the van. You never know . . . you might set a new fashion trend!
Your initial purchase price would have included VAT and the current offer to you will not include VAT.
If so, then your starting point should be 80% of the initial price. If you're now being offered 67% (2/3rds) of the original price, then this may not be that bad: it represents about 84% of the VAT-exclusive value.
