This afternoon I had a telephone call from "Microsoft", saying that they had received lots of error messages sent by my computer, indicating that I had a Trojan Worm.
The Indian voiced fellow knew my name, address and post code, as verification that he was genuine. He led me through the steps to run MSCONFIG and wanted to know how many Services were stopped. He tried to persuade me that they were stopped because of the virus and asked me to go to AMMYY.COM. I downloaded a page from the site but was too wise to run the EXE, as requested.
I had been telling him I was suspicious and would not proceed all through the conversation but he was very insistent that Microsoft wanted to sort out the problem and that I could trust him. When I wasn't prepared to run the executable file, he rang off.
Subsequently, Googling AMMYY revealed the enormity of the scam. He had obviously found my personal details in the telephone directory.
I have searched this site for the scam but found nothing. Apologies if I am repeating existing knowledge but I consider myself to be computer savvy and was not aware of it so there are probably many potential victims in MHF.
Have a look at AMMYY scams on Google. There are lots of UTube videos about it as well.
I had a similar call a week ago - but I asked him too many questions, which apparently took him out of his comfort zone, and his final words to me as he slammed the phone down - "F*ck You!"

I just had one of these calls today. There is often a bit of a pause, as there was here. Then a distant Asian accent: 'I'm calling on behalf of your internet provider... ' I replied, 'No you're not, I know about you..' The call terminated before I got the chance to point out that if this person was from my provider they would first of all named the provider.
And I'm pretty sure that Microsoft would never cold call an individual computer owner.
I had that and it all sounded bery plausible, he assured me that he was ringing on behalf of MS and knew my name and phone number...... that is where it fell down.......
He rang just after we had moved house and changed service provider so when he said he was ringing on behalf of our previous service provider I had a distinct whiff of "eau de rat",
I quizzed him about it and he assured me that the ISP was correct and that I must have made a mistake, maybe my wife had changed providers.......
This call took him 20 minutes and got him nowhere, I would not even tell him who my wife is, or turn on the computer (which he had asked me to do) or do anything he asked, I would not give him any information at all and eventually he realised that he was getting nowhere, swore at me and rang off, interestingly it did not sound like a voice from the sub-continent.........
But it has been around for a couple of years that I know - but thanks for raising it, it never hurts to warn people or remind them that there are more unscrupulous villains out there than we realise and not all cold calls are innocent.
I've had a number of these and after the call I dial 1471 to see if there is a number.I was told they want to access the PC to get your personal details bank a/c contacts etc.
On one occassion I got a number and phoned the Police, just given a crime ref number and still awaiting any follow up 6months later!
