I have a nice non HD tv that I am quite happy with.

What I'd like to know, please, is whether I can connect an HD Freeview / sat set top box to this and still tune to all available programes. I appreciate that I will not get the improved quality of picture and that the box is likely to be more expensive. My idea is, perhaps, have a bit of 'future proofing' in the boxes.

I'm sure there are many pro's and con's to this subject such as any tv I buy in the future is likely to have all the 'whistles and bells' in it so perhaps I should stick with a cheap non HD box.

Your suggestions and thoughts would be appreciated.

All the best

bill

I've just connected my Humax Foxsat HD box to a non HD TV via a scart cable and I was able to watch all the freesat channels (including the ones broadcasting in HD) without any problems. So long as your TV and freesat box have compatible connections such as scart or component (I imagine your TV doesn't have HDMI), then you shouldn't have a problem.

I haven't got an HD Freeview box so can't comment but I imagine that should work as well. You obviously need to decide whether you wish to go the freesat or freeview route.

I have also just connected the Humax Foxsat box to a non HD set and was very surprised that I can see the HD channels too, the Humax is a good system IMO, we are in France and I wondered whether it would be able to pick up the UK freesat clearly - it does including BBC channels I have never heard of before (BBC Alba???)

go ahead and try you should be OK from my experience

A far as I am aware the Freeview HD and Freesat HD boxes have a scart out and as such they down sample the HD channels to normal TV's.

Personally, I love TV and wouldn't be without it, I would get a recording box. Then you can set it to record stuff while you are out and about enjoying yourself and if the weather turns bad or just in the evening you have tv to watch.
Freeview recorders only need a single aerial feed. Most Freesat recorders need 2 satellite feeds to without issues. The Humax Foxsat HDR is one exception to this. It can be configured to work with a single satellite feed. It can record 1 channel and you can watch a sub set of the channels at the same time!!! It's not perfect but better than most freesat boxes on a single satellite feed (single lnb).

Thanks for the replies. Appreciated.

We, generally, do without tv whilst abroad but sometimes I do have a look to see whats available through the ariel.

Now I know that the HD box works to a non HD TV I can get on and make my decision on which way to go.

I take the point about getting a recorder, I have the Virgin V+ Box at home and it is very handy.

We'll see, but I think it will be FreeView rather than FreeSat for us in the UK. Don't know yet but will continue to 'ponder' the matter.

Thanks again

Hi Bill

It may seem an obvious thing to say, but you are aware I guess that you need a satellite dish if you did opt for a Freesat box. (Others have not been aware, and have bought the wrong box!)

Freeview will not work abroad, whereas Freesat works fine.

I am told that new channels appear on Freesat sooner than Freeview, and in the future there might be extra channels on Freesat which do not appear on Freeview at all. (It was a very helpful Halfords assistant who told me, and he seemed pretty clued up, but I know no more than that.)

Since the switchover, Freeview will be fine if you only want UK usage. A short length of wet string would work as an aerial ( Laughing ) and trees don't get in the way of the signal like they do with a dish.

Hope this helps

Dave (Zebedee)

Freeview will work abroad, this is the system we have used for the last 3 years. Perhaps you meant that freeview will not give you UK programmes abroad.

We have a visionplus 12v freeview box which linked by a scart to the TV. TV recently broke so we now have a TV with inbuilt freeview box.

We like to have the freeview whilst abroad as we can watch the news, get the weather forecast and watch football/sport. We certainly don't miss UK programmes.

Bill if you are interested in a second hand 12v freeview box pm me.

Thanks Jan - I did mean that.

Good thing somebody can read and interpret the senile ramblings. Surprised Laughing

Zebadee - Thanks for that. Yes aware about having to have a dish.

What I did wonder about was the Freeview working abroad. That's to say I knew you wouldn't get the Freeview programmes but did think you could tune to the local stations. Jan's post has cleared this up.

I'm not too bothered about the amount / new programmes coming on line as we only watch the main ones in the UK anyway.

Jan, pm on way.

Not wishing to be too pedantic Dave.
You can pick up Jersey Freeview virtually all of the west coast of Normandy down to Mt. St. Michel.
I'm sure some parts of Upper Normandy are within range of the UK Freeview signals.

And yes a Freeview Box or so equipped TV will get French TNT channels all over La Belle France.

Ray.
