I know these can be a contentious subject. We are discussing the practicalities of buying a generator for our trip to France/Spain in Jan/Feb. I have seen posts where some people would not be without one in the winter.
As this is our first trip across the water we do not know when and where we will find sites with EHU as we hope to be as flexible as possible. It would be interesting to find out from experienced travellers what their thoughts are.
We would certainly try and be courteous with our use and not annoy others.
I can see pros and cons. The advantages of power over the storage issues on a MH without a garage.
If we do go down the generator route is it Kippor or Honda. There is quite a price difference. We would aim for a 2000w model.
Many thanks in anticipation of your answers.
Graham

Hi,
I have had a KiporIG2000 for over a year, used it now and again, maybe 15/20 hrs. I found it reliable and at 2kw. powerful enough for my needs. It doesn't sound any louder than the Hondas I have seen others useing

Depends on how reliant you are on 240v
Our van only needs this for the microwave which we rarely use. Refillable gas tanks for the fridge and heating and 2 batteries for everything else. All depends on how long you intend to be stationary is the deciding factor!

As caravanners and generally preferring quiet CL/CS-type sites without EHU we used our generator a lot.

Having switched to motorhoming, and using the vehicle to travel around siteseeing each day, we find we very rarely need a generator as the engine keeps the habitation battery charged up each day.

We still carry a generator, however, as a 'just-in-case' insurance against a flat battery. We don't have a garage so keep the gennie under the dinette table while travelling, then bung it outside when on site. The petrol can lives under one of the rear seats while travelling, and outside when on site.

Our's is a 1000kw Kipor and is fine for the limited use it gets. A Honda is more than twice the price, which might be worth it if you're planning on using it much more frequently than we do.

Bear in mind while reading all the negative rants about generators that it's not the generator which is at fault, but the thoughtless user thereof.

Graham,

If you feel you need to buy one, then buy it.

If you feel you would like one, but not sure if you would use it, or that you may upset someone, then I would suggest, don't buy it.

I personally don't have one, there has been times when I could have used one, but few and far between.

I have also camped next to people that have used them, if they are considerate in the use its not a problem.

Steve

As for size of a genny, it depends why you want it.

IF it's battery charging, lights, TV etc then 1Kw will be fine.

We've the EU10i and it will run the hot water/heating as long as it's on single element on the Truma dial [900w] It's also quiet as generators go.

IF you are wanting to run larger items then you'll have to go the 2Kw.
I was surprised by the size of the 2Kw genny [EU20i] it's quite large.

Make sure you have a good chain and padlock, for when you are using it.

Hi

You might also consider an Efoy fuel cell as an alternative, especially if it is only for back-up.

well i used a Honda EU20i for 2 years full timing and it got hammered and stood up to it all very well

I now sell Kipor gennies and although I personally don't think the quality is as good as the Honda they are substantially cheaper (less than half price) and the sound level difference between them is negligible. I use one in the shop to demo and the same unit powers the outside stall I use at shows and never had a problem with it in a couple of years.

So its a case of you pays your money you takes your chance, you could buy a Kipor IG2000i and keep it for a couple of years and if it broke down, you could buy another brand new one and still be the same price as a Honda lol or conversely buy a Honda at first, pay the money up front and get the reliability that the extra money buys.

The Kipor (and probably the Honda) gennys describe a
Quote:
load-dependent smart throttle system
that reduces the throttle speed when there is less demand.

Would it be a good idea then, if you are only expecting to use up to a 1000W, to buy the 2000W generator as it would run slower and therefore quieter?
