Well for those who didn't see the announcement last night the server was booked in for a maintenance window to have some diagnostics tests carried out on hard drive (slow write speeds indicative of a possible future failure / slow speed access)
The maintenance started around midnight
It was supposed to only take a few hours but overran
Then the problems really started, the hosting company tried to reboot the server and it wouldn't boot up correctly
After much tooing and fro-ing they finally admitted they had screwed the server !!!
So we were left with a server that was unusable which required a complete format and start afresh
As we had encountered speed issues lately (even though I think optimization and tweaking had resolved it) I took the opportunity to negotiate for a new much faster server as site was down already !
After negotiating a discount due to this downtime I have spent the rest of this evening / morning so far getting the new server sorted, backup restored and now need to get to work tweaking for even more speed (server config is just default and not tuned for our new 16 core cpu speed )
But the important thing is we are back !!!
I can appreciate that the last 24hrs have been annoying / frustrating for the membership at large also and to this end I will be adding an extra week on to everyones subscription to recompense for the lack of service (It was out of my control completely) but at least now we have the site in a nice clean environment with a super fast server (even though its costing me a fair whack more lol)
Thanks for the update Nuke. I was beginning to suffer withdrawal symptoms! Fingers crossed for yoi that everything runs smoothly from herein.
I have noticed a lot of posts from the last 36 hours or so appear to be missing - so have they been deleted in error or will they return once you have had the chance to tweak and fine tune?
Nice to have MHF back though as you were certainly missed!!!
Well the server has been offline all day so there will be no posts for basically 24hrs and then a few hours before that as the backups kick in at a set time.
Dave, good to see you back and appreciate the worry you must have had and the work you have done to get it back.
It appears that some posts have been lost. I am sure that "Do couriers know where they are going" had a lot more entries than the four showing now. I had two posts in it which are not there now and do not appear in 'your posts'.

done some more work over the last few hours, adding in a php cache software, got galleries back online, fixed a few other minor niggles and done a little tweaking
And so I think its time for bed !!!!
Any more issues found please log in this thread and will look at it "later"

I didn't know there is a Motorhome Facts facebook page. I did try yesterday to see if there was one - but nothing came up spelling it as I've just done. I've tried again, this morning on Facebook, but still nothing. What do I need to type into the Facebook search?
