Hi everybody my father is giving me extended use of a duetto autosleeper to give my 14yr old daughter myself and (by default) our 2 dogs the experience of a lifetime. We havent holidayed in over 5yrs and I havent driven (bar a couple of hire car trips) since '07 so I am as nervous as hell of driving a large (to me) van.
We live up on the beautiful West Coast of Scotland
Anybody got any tips ?
Many moons ago with my older children we lived on the cut (canals) and my older daughter said today "mum you used to manage a 40ft narrowboat" but as I pointed out I had the length in front of me where I could see what it was up to!! this time the length , are they almost 18ft? will be behind me !!
It is arriving here on Friday and I don't think I will be able to just look at it for long before I am overcome with wanderlust and I have this notion that if we headed for a campsite after reading up on where the indicators/gear stick/wipers/head;ights are located/operated from and then sit in the van and read up on how the living area operates ....
Any input anybody?
I am well aware that the thought has crossed your mind that I may be sleightly mad and should follow a different course so please do say I really really will value your input

Welcome. Wishing you many miles and smiles in the Duetto. After a few miles you will wonder why you worried.

Take it easy.

If the front goes through, so will what's behind you.

Don't feel pressurised by drivers behind you.

Relax and all will be well.

Having driven buses, I always found that if the mirrors go through, you are fairly safe and if its a tight corner, use the mirrors to check that the back end does not take a short-cut.
After 10 minutes you should be wondering what you were worried about.
Have fun!

Alan

Welcome and congratulations on getting the loan of a van.
If you can manage a narrowboat then a duetto is a doddle. Those canal boats have no brakes and steer from the back, the duetto hopefully has brakes and steers from the front.
Take it day by day and retain your sense of humour - it will get you through the inevitable hiccups. Remember all of us are still learning, regardless of how long we have been doing this.
Any problems someone on here will always help if they can

Chris

I just insured our van through mhf starting tomoro so it is getting more 'real' by the minute, just think in 24hrs we could be tootling down the road . Anybody got any suggestions of what I will need in the van that I am likely to forget in the excitement?
