this sounds like the rad to me, this is a common fault.you should be able to have just a new core fitted if the top and bottom are not plastic, otherwise it is a complete new rad, change the hoses at the same time. Oh yes and add new anti-freeze.
put a hosepipe in the top of the rad and see if the flow is a full flow out of the bottom.

Ok, latest is that having checked the rad for blockages the garage suspect a cracked head. Shocked It's going away for an X ray.

They said they'd replace the impellor pump at the same time anyway.

They tell me the cracked head and/or gasket can cause different problems depending on what part is split/cracked. It can cause exhaust gases to enter the cooling system, building up pressure, or coolant to enter the parts of the engine it shouldn't, causing water and oil mix and that mayonnaise seen under the oil filler cap. There's no mayo in our engine.

They also tell me a cracked head is not unusual in Ducatos which have done around 170k as mine has.

I'm now preparing myself for the estimate... Sad

Hi spatz1, yes, I'm as sure as I could be.

The thermostat comes as part of an alloy housing which is quite obviously new.

Also, I trust them as I've know both the guys who own the garage for years and they live in our village, and bad news would travel fast...

I had this happen in one of my cars, it kept pressurising the coolant system in my case. In some cases they can plasma-weld it, blend it and refit it but the trouble is they need to find the extremities of the crack to be entirely successful, in my case I had a new head fitted, it was slightly more expensive but it did the trick and the car never missed a beat after that for at least 30,000 miles - after which I part ex'd it for a new car.

Fingers crossed they find the fault and it's a cheap one. If the head needs lots of work I would look at a recon head as cracks can be deep in the head.

As for 'exhaust gases to enter the cooling system' that would be extremely unusual. The water system is pressurised at about 15psi and exhaust gasses have a pressure in the hundreds of millibar range. OK so the exhaust pressure might be a bit higher on over run as the throttle is closed and the turbo will be slowing down due to little air in the induction system.
It is much more common for the water system to leak into the exhaust path of the head. That way you loose water and you can't see a leak as it is turning to steam in the exhaust.

I hope the find a very obvious crack in the head and you get a decent recon head for a good price. Hope it's a cheap fix anyway.

I assume that a 'replacement engine isn't cheaper? When you add up the time to rebuild the head and install the gasket vs the removal and fitting of a second hand engine? Bearing in mind that your engine has done 170,000 miles it might be a better/cheaper option?

Yes, that's one of the options the garage is looking at. I reckon it might be a good idea, especially as some idiot put a tank full of petrol through it not so long ago... Embarassed

That petrol stuff really cleans all the gunk off the inside of the engine, and it really clatters now!

I know we learn by our mistakes, but when all's said and done, I'd rather not have to anymore, thanks ... Rolling Eyes

Right then, final results just in case you're interested...

As they suspected the head it was sent to be x-rayed, and it turned out it was cracked. So to cut a long story, etc. I picked up the motorhome yesterday, refitted with a recon head.

All works fine, no overheating and cab heater now works properly too.

Got it back just in time for it to undertake its usual role at this time of year, which is to store loads of stuff we don't want in the house over Christmas! Rolling Eyes
