Well the van is now back up and running Smile

The problem was the standard Fiat wiring from the ignition switch to the starter solenoid.

The feed from the ignition switch runs through the fusebox, via a shunt, down to the solenoid. Somewhere between the entry to the fusebox and the solenoid had developed a very high resistance.

The solution was to fit a new cable from the input plug at the fusebox to a relay, supplied directly from the battery, with the relay supplying the solenoid. The solenoid can pull up to 50amps, so use a 70amp relay.

Hopefully this info will help someone else in the future.
