I object to the word 'plonker' surely entertainer is more appropriate. That is what I considered myself as when trying to use a dish and tri-pod. After a few months someone else got so fed up with my attempts to get TV that she bought me a CAMOS dome.
Now I only have to get rid of the Maxview dish and the tri-pod and I will be in her good books again as they are cluttering up one of her rooms!!

The attention to accuracy comes from having trained as a navigating officer. In exams you could lose half the marks in a question for applying a compass error of a few "seconds" of arc (never mind minutes of arc) the wrong way as it would be marked down as an error of principle.
Having spent several years living by compass you don't give much thought to working it out accurately, I do what 747 does and sight the bearing with an object on the horizon which usually works in the dark too.
The first time I used our dish was in Austria and the dish had to be pointed to within much less than 1 degree, in fact to within about 2mm at the lnb.
By the way, in 1978 we had an early satnav called, I think, Magnavox. The satellites were in low polar orbit and you got a few fixes a day, if you were lucky it would fix the ships position within a few miles! Best thing was that the receiver would beep when one came over the horizon so if it was before or after twilight you could stand out on the bridge wing and try to spot it "flying" by. Nothing much else to do in the middle of the ocean.
Right - I've read all through this and tried to follow the advice and I still can't get the damn thing to work so can I ask for some help please?
The system in my French van is made by Inov Tech with a manual wind up dish. The knob for winding up the dish has a dial calibrated with numbers that go from zero when the dish is down to 999 when it is fully up and tilted to it's maximum angle. With it is an instruction book with maps showing the number that I should dial to get various satellites with various sizes of dish and location.
Tried with the appropriate number for location and dish and did all the slow turn from east towards south and tried with lost of different numbers for the elevation but all I get on the screen is "No Signal".
Am I being stupid and missing the fact that there is a connection problem elsewhere in the system which results in the "No signal" display or is there no signal because I'm pointing in the wrong direction / elevation?
If the problem is not elsewhere in the system but I have the elevations and directions wrong, is there any correlation between the numbers on my dial and the elevations, bearings, angles etc given on sites such as Dishpoint? I got the exact location on that site and printed out the map with the direction on it and used that to line up where it should be pointing and then realised that all I had to do was look at the dish on the house roof and point in the same direction!
Previous van had an Oyster automatic system so I've never had to do this before and I think I am being a bit thick and missing something!
All help and advice will be gratefully received and much appreciated.
Regards
Brian

I assume you have made sure you have a clear view of the southern sky? Have you seen any satellite signals at all? Usually scanning around you can at least pick up the wrong satellite. Won't give you a picture but you should still see a signal? If not start to suspect you have a problem. being a French system are you sure it is set up to receive Astra 2D at 28.2 Have you got a signal finder, try that at the input of your receiver to see if you get anything. In addition to helping you point the dish for maximum signal, they are also usually equipped with indicators so you can see that power is being supplied to and switch over of the LNB is occurring . Lastly check all your connections.
