Does anyone know if there is a device that can receive and retransmit a wireless signal. I have free wifi at my place in Spain, but due to the siting of the transmitter, I only get a decent signal at the back of the house and would like to improve that if possible.I don't usually have a laptop here, just iPad and iPhone .

It's called a wireless repeater, used to re-broadcast a wireless signal. Google it Smile

IMHO there are two companies leading the field in terms of capable kit. They are TP-Link and Ubiquiti. The latter is the better quality "pro" stuff (where Linksys/Cisco used to be) and the former is the good domestic stuff (where D-Link and Netgear used to be).
Have a look at http://wiki.ubnt.com/AirOS_Wireless_Repeater_Configuration
The problem with many Southern European sites is that so much building is done with reenforced concrete, effectively making each room its own Faraday cage!
If you can cable from your existing router through to the other side of your house and shove another wireless router on that end, you may be able to get a good signal for very little expense.
The other possibility is to use a very high power adaptor such as the Ubiquiti Nanostation2 which has much better wall penetration than most.
Good luck
Patrick
