Silly question, but is there anyway a wheel might be a little loose?
I had it on a truck once a long time ago and it was a kind of slapping noise..
If you have had the noise for a lot of miles, it would not be this as it would have developed.

It sounds exactly like the noise we had from our old VW T25 when going round tight corners and roundabouts. A knocking from the rear corners (rear drive).

The RAC man thought it was CV joints but it stopped and never came back so we ignored it. He thought it was old grease in the joint occassionally sticking.

You sound like you have way more knowledge than me on greasy things though.

Is the noise at the front or back?

I agree it doesnt sound like CV joints... they are easy to detect... put it on full lock and reverse and you will hear the clicking... A knocking sounds like badly worn Drop Links to me... does it just knock the once when cornering or does it knock-knock-knock ?
is it worse cornering over rough ground/surfaces ?

Sounds like CV joints to me too.

Get them done in Spain Ads it'll be way cheaper than the UK. There are loads of garages that could do that and it'll be as good as any work done in the UK.

Get a diagnosis Addie. Don't rely on driveshafts being cheap in Spain, the fitting may be, Alan.

Some 5 years ago we had a problem with 'knocking' on our 6 month old Fiat when climbing hairpin bends in the Alps. I thought the problem was suspension or similar. and headed back down to Genoble to find a Fiat dealer, the problem promptly disappeared! However we did find a dealer and explained the symptons as best we could and were told it could be fixed in a weeks time. A weeks wait seemed a long time and we sought out a second dealer. On the way there reflecting on what was said by the first dealer it seemed that he was familiar with the problem though he had not undertaken any inspection of the vehicle. The second dealer, again without any inspection of the vehicle identified the problem as being that the drive shafts needed replacing. Climbing steep alpine roads, swapping from lock to lock with little weight on the front was the cause of the problem and that modified, (longer!) drive shafts would be fitted under warrenty. Having been assured that the vehicle was safe we had the work carried out by Fiat in Carlise who firstly had to check with the Fiat technical dept. as they had never come across the problem before. It cured the problem. May be worth considering.

We had a Fiat dealer confirm the problem as ball joints and was told they'll be fine for another 10,000km which is more then what we have left to do on this trip. I'm going to replace anything remotely worn for the new owner when we get back in March.
