I was looking for something to use in my unlocked HTC Desire -contract with Vodafone approaching its end.

Came across this company:
http://www.abroadband.com/en/GB/whatisabroadband

You can get a sim on its own, or a dongle to stick in netbook. 19.5 euros up front then 59 cents per mb. Just need to use it once per year or it'll cost an extra 10euros.

Seems decent value to me

What do you think? Anyone used it?

Tell, €600 ish a Gb, good value? Not really.

MasMovil in Spain 3 cents a mb = €30 a Gb.

Fonic in Germany €25 a month for unlimited data.

I am sure others can add to this list for other countries or there is the Vodafone data traveller deal (I think I got the name right) at a few pounds a month for access throughout Europe, Alan.

Thanks Alan

In my case I'd be on a PAYG-with Vfone's Data Traveller you need to be contract spending at least £30 pcm on contract then it's £10 extra for
Roaming. I certainly don't envisage spending £40 plus pcm once my contract is over

Based on our last hols abroad I reckon 4 or 5 mb every other day - if that

I'm afraid you are wrong there, Tellbell.

Vodafone Data Traveller is available to ALL contract customers regardless of contract length or cost of that contract for an additional cost of £10 on top of your regular tariff for a minimum period of 30 days - so you can just enable it for one month if you wish.
You could go on a 30-day contract or a 12 month one if you wish.

If you sign up as a new customer via Quidco you will get upto £140 cashback. So for example:

12 month sim-free @ £15.50/mth
- £90 cashback
Total monthly contract cost: £8/mth

Or £18/mth for those months where you intend to use it abroad - those months you get an allowance of 25MB/day.

If you do not wish to go on a contract Data Traveller is also available to Vodafone PAYG customers for £2/day - or 8p a MB if you use your allowance.

Your math just doesn't add up.

I've just checked on my o2 account which is sim only £15pm for 600 minutes, ul texts and 50Mb data daily.

Tethering is allowed by o2 and they now have a new "Web Daily Europe" service for £1.50 for up to 15Mb per day only on the days you use it. Suits me fine for a backup as I'll usually use wifi on the laptop. You simply text DATA to 2020 to activate it a few days before leaving UK.

Addie- then they've changed it in the last few months-at one time you had to be on at least £30 per month contract

Alan-France, Germany, Belgium

Kev-The O2 deal looks good

Thanks all

My Vodafone account is £20 a month and Ive had it turned on since June. Bugger. I just realised I should have turned it off two weeks agon when we got back.

They launched Data Traveller in December 2010 and I've had it activated on my £15 contract since Feb 2011 Smile

Barry and I work for Vodafone* Wink

This might help with some detail I couldn't find on the Vodafone site:
http://www.europebycamper.com/2011/06/guide-to-vodafone-data-traveller-data_01.html

* We don't really - we're just grateful for a decent data roaming service allowing us to continue to work from Europe.

abroadband = bloody expensive

We thought it looked a good idea until we got the bills coming through.

If I remember correctly the problem with the system is that you are billed per meg downloaded. So every time you log on all the background crap you get you are billed for.
We logged on to our bank to check the balance and move some cash between accounts and it cost us over 20€.
Our total bill for 4 or 5 times logging on for no more than 15 mins in total was over 130€

In my opinion . . . . . steer clear.
