I had a new clutch about 3 years ago, after having had mechanical tuning which nearky doubled the torque and made my 4000kg 8m Hymer go up hills quite respectably. However after only maybe 12,000 miles, if I really put my foot down it's slipping again at the engine speed that gives maximum torque...(about 2500RPM). I am considering a competion clutch with an uprated pressure plate...or maybe just the standard friction plate with an uprated pressure plate would be better....I suppose it's an issue of clamp force.

Here is a link to a 'trackday' clutch kit...ha ha...can't quite imagine my MH careering into S bends hot on the heels of a Porsche...

Larkspeed Trackday Ducato 2.8tdi clutch...

At present there is no loose play in the clutch pedal (cable) but it does seem to bite at about halfway up.

Anyone got any thoughts on or experience of this please?

Thanks

Simon

I have a 6 paddle cluctch in my car rated rolling roaded at 257 hp but its the torque that made me upgrade from standard as it slipped like yours....( torque 280)

Its a pig to drive unless your used to it as the competition clutches snatch and you have very little control when manoevering at parking speed....
not sure how that ll go down in a motorhome..

Thanks Spatz1,

I wondered about snatch, I think just an uprated pressure plate to clamp the standard friction plate more firmly is the way to go then. the Ducato has a high reverse gear and is already a bit difficult to reverse.

If you are on your second clutch after your 'mechanical tuning' I would worry about the stress being put in the rest of the engine / turbo etc as clearly the tuning is over and above what the engine components are able to handle.

Believe me , you dont want snatch and judder on a motorhome when parking ....
Be carefull chosing the uprated pressure plate, as its the torque rating you need to be concerned with not the bhp...

Lets hope g box and diffs are two a penny but i d assume you ve stayed withing upper limits Laughing Laughing

Dont forget the clutch pressure plate springs weaken over time when you size it Wink

I can tell you with certainty a paddle clutch is not for you their either in or out theres no in betwwen, you need high revs and just let it go to set off, if you suceed in slipping it to manouvre you will wreck it in minutes, i would keep to a mineral plate but try to source a heavier pressure plate, it may be possible if your prepared to pay and find some one who knows what their doing to have your flywheel modified to accept a bigger heavier clutch which is what many club racers do which will cure your problem and still give you driveability.

definetly do not go near a paddle clutch, you wont be able to manouvre slowly at all , parking ferries etc.

a paddle clutch is and needs to be used as an off off switch basically. I would loook at increasing the cover clamp pressure for sure, or curve off the top end torque curve slightly, however I guess you are now very happy with the mid range torque and it will surely make the truck an easier drive

Out of interest why would you want 450 to 500 lbs torque on a motorhome that can only increase on cold mornings likes these as the airs thicker ....
No wonder you noticed the slip early winter Laughing Laughing

hi hymer_bay. when we had a remap done 18 month ago the guy told me NOT to go at it like a bull in a china shop .we only had it done for the extra m.p.g it gave us the extra power was nice as well but pulling 5 ton you have to drive to suit the extra power . yes they will go up hill like a jet but left in cruise at 56 to 60 m.p.h that's fast enough . and as for put strain on your engine i see fiat have bumped up there 160 b.h.p to 180 b.h.p and i bet its still the same engine .jud
