At home I feed my caffeine addiction via a trusty Gaggia Classic - 20 years old, overhauled 2 or 3 times by the wonderful Gaggia UK - (not sure where I'll get it fixed now they've gone, though. ) It gets used twice most days - cappuccino at breakfast, ristretto in the evening.
When we're away in the van though, this machine is clearly impractical, and we just use a Melitta filter cone. I thought about the Bialetti stove-top pots, and the "handpump" type espresso devices, but the risk of grounds getting everywhere is then an issue.
Having stayed in a hotel on Friday, though, where there was a Nespresso machine in the room, it got me wondering whether that might be a workable solution - it makes decent coffee, there's no risk of mess from loose grounds, and the machine (I think it was a Krups) was fairly compact - even if a tall and unstable-looking shape. Obviously the cost of capsules is horrendous, and it would be useful only on hookup. (We don't have an inverter.)
Does anyone (apart from those lucky devils with top-end German vans with espresso machines built-in, that is) use a Nespresso (or similar) machine in the van? If so how does it work out? Do they need a 16A hook-up or will they manage on less?

We have been using this supplier for some years at home and when one of the very small manual machines had a issue we used the warentee and got sent a brand new machine. This my coffee snob better half uses in the caravan.
I use a small Standard Bialetti in the van and a Stainless steel 4 cup at home.
They make very different coffee.
The Nespresso is the answer I suspect for you and no grouts!
But one drawback. You can not run it on gas? So she who drinks my brew when no electric.
One other small problem is the pods are only available from the company on line. They get delivered by a top market courier van. All very posh but not to helpful if you run out somewhere out of the way.

We have 2 machines at home, an original Braun Tassimo and a Senseo. I like both of them although the Tassimo pods are expensive. I have just found a a replacement pod holder for the Senseo that you put your own coffee in and close the lid and use it just like the normal pods that you buy. It was less than 4 euros from our local Intermarche and there was 2 in a pack so very inexpensive.
I have a nespresso in the van and also a frothing machine. Makes great coffee, buy pods on line or Selfridges. Drawbacks can only use on hookup, has to be packed away when traveling but as a cappucino addict wouldn't be without it. Costs about 29p per cup so much cheaper than buying one at a cafe.
I was only contemplating this very thing this morning.
I've a Dualit espresivo which takes either coffee pods or ground coffee.
I've been using pods recently but as prevoiusly posted, they are expensive.
Looking on the bottom of the unit shows power consumption as 1150-1350 watts which should run off a 6amp supply, but is there also a power surge when they are first switched on, or does that only apply to ac motors?
I have occasionally used a cafetiere but don't like the idea of my grey water tank filling with grounds, but I do like several cups of a good coffee each day, so the Dualit may yet become another 'essential' item to be added to the ever expanding touring weight of my van

Our alternative is to use a filter cone with a thermos type jug to catch the coffee - the filter containing the grounds then goes in the bin. The insulated jug with lid (push a button to pour) was quite cheap in a Casino some years ago. Keeps the coffee hot for quite a while.

Hello, I have been using Nespresso for the past 8years. In that time I have 3 different machines, and that's purely only because I get bored with the design of them. I currently have the Citiz machine with a separate Aerocino. I would recommend this set up if you plan to use it with a generator, this way you can froth your milk first then add your favourite Nespresso pod. I buy my pods fro. The Nespresso Boutique in Selfridges, but have also used the online shop. Whilst this isn't the cheapest pod system on the market it is by far the best for quality and choice of Espresso.

The coffee is good enough for it to be worth getting an inverter to run off hook-up. It pulls about 1.3kW power, so it is similar to a small electric kettle and no problem on any hook-up we have ever used.
Downsides - the supply of capsules is restricted (I think to subsidise the machines), so are bit expensive. Some people might be worried about discarding the spent aluminium cases.
Upsides - ultra convenient, the best tasting coffee bar none, internet ordering and delivery is super-slick.

Forgot to mention in my earlier post that Nespressoard one of the only club which offer a recycle service for their spent pods. You use you spent coffe grindings to fertilise your plants ( it's great!) then send the club your empty pods for free, they send you envelopes when you join the club.
This should help ease the environmental issues raised by Splitwagon.
Another reason to choose Nespresso.
