Our home insurance renewal quote is £180 but that only covers 60 days away and we would like to do a 3-4 month tour of Europe. Does anyone have any recommendations for companies who would provide buildings and contents insurance at reasonable cost?
I used to do my insurance with a broker. They placed it with Aviva who agreed to extend the cover for only a small admin charge. I am now with Saga who have said that if the occasion arises, the current underwriter, Ageas Insurance, will extend the cover at no charge.
Esure on the other hand simply would not contemplate an extension and restricted my cover simply for asking the question!
I got a quote from Aviva for the standard 60 days away cover, but it was £245 compared to £180 (from directline), so I will need to ask them how much it would be - thanks for the info. I'll also check with Saga.
It doesnt say YOU must be there just that it is not unoccupied for LONGER than 60 days. if you can get a relative/neighbour/friend to spend 1 night in the property then the 60 day clock starts again !!
Read EXACTLY what the policy wording says, assume nothing, and DONT read into the wording something that is not there.
The assumptions I agreed to in order to get the quote said that the property was occupied ONLY by us and our close family, so I suspect the insurance companies could exclude friend/neighbour. I may have to ask the question before we renew.
Be very careful on the 60 day limit and and a friend stays 1 night. We have a couple we are very good friends with and while they were in spain two years ago with us their house was broken into.
It was not until they got back after 6 months that it got reported. The insurance company wanted to see all utility bills before they would pay out and guess what as there was so little use of bills they would not pay out.
