Our Broadband works ok on the home computer but my wife's laptop is having problems connecting and staying connected.
In parts of the house she can't connect at all (the lounge) but can connect in the kitchen - but then it will suddenly go offline without warning.
Is there a device we could use to help to improve service - Netgear Wifi Range extender has been mentioned?
Any help appreciated.

For what it is worth Keith, my advice would be to back up all her important stuff.

I changed over to BT and it was crap, kept dropping out etc.

Then my laptop froze then crashed and I lost the lot. It was not my broadband, it was my 8 year old lappie that was the problem.

ps, BT broadband is perfect on my new netbook.

With my 'new' equipment my BT broadband keeps dropping out - have now had to hardwire - even my wireless printers have problems. Bt sent a new router but that was worse Shocked If I am in the same room as the router with a laptop there is no problem!!

It's not the broadband that is dropping out, it's the wireless LAN, Local Area Network.

The broadband is the connection between the routers WAN Wide Area Network interface and the ISPs Point Of Presence, the wireless part is the local network which includes any wireless devices you have and the wireless Access Point built into the router, which is an internal router interface.

It's a pet hate of mine that broadband suppliers sell their service as wireless broadband when it isn't, in fact it's wired broadband but they provide a router that has a built in wireless access point.

Anyway, you could try to improve the wireless range etc by adding further access points dotted around the house, however all the wireless APs have to support this and I can't remember the protocol used off the top of my head, also if the routers AP is still involved and it's failing for a reason other than range; you won't be better off as the wireless network will still fail to gain access to the router and the internet on its WAN interface.

Alternatively if your router also has an RJ45 wired internal port, you could switch the wireless off in the ISPs router (or leave it on and ignore it) and connect a different access point to the router using the wired port, you may need to configure the AP to turn off things such as DHCP which may be provided by the router etc. obviously you'll need to configure the security in the new AP.

You don't say whose router you are using, and they all vary in performance, but you might try moving it around until you find a location which covers the rooms in which you and your wife want to work. They are all, to some extent, directional, so some rotating might help, and you will probably find that performance is best with the router positioned as high as possible.
We are assuming that you live in a " normal" house - but if you are in a 50-room mansion with the dining room a hundred yards away, then maybe you should get a man in. Very Happy

Hi

We had exactly the same problems a couple of years ago. Spoke to the bloke via the BT help line and talked us through changing the channel on the router (from memory I think there is a choice of 11 channels ) and bingo it has worked faultlessly in any room of the house since.

Regards

Nidge

Try going into set-up mode and changing the channel on the router, in case something else is interfering with the frequency it's currently working on and degrading the signal.

If that doesn't work then the netgear wireless range extender unit is the way to go.

A lot of the newer routers have so called smart settings for the channel as does the BT router but even changing this did not resolve my particular problem. The signal appeared to come in waves which could be seen on the signal meter on my iMac.

I would make sure your router has an external antenna and then replace it with a more powerful one. Under £10 and made all the difference to ours - the routers with no antennas can be pretty poor.

Many thanks for the replies.

We have a 'normal' house, we had to sell the Mansion when the Staff upped and went to work at Downton Abbey, and the lounge and kitchen are about the same distance from the router.

The laptop is reasonable new and works ok.

The router is 'BT Home Hub 2' and I can't see anywhere to fit an external antenna.

'rogerblack' suggested going into set-up mode and changing the channel on the router - any chance of a tutorial on how to do that please?
