The LAN wireless signal between your router and laptop can be affected by other radio signals in the vicinity....for example I sometimes use wireless headphones for the TV and these often cause my LAN to break down. May be worth checking any other radio/cordless equipment you are operating in the house
Hello Keith.
I tend to agree with 747 as my older laptop has a very limited range in comparison to my much later netbook.
I carry a small external Wi-Fi ariel with the laptop but completely unnecessary with the net book.
Ray.

. . . 'rogerblack' suggested going into set-up mode and changing the channel on the router - any chance of a tutorial on how to do that please?
Sorry, Keith, mine's an Orange Livebox (with which the Netgear works a treat in the Black chambers!). Afraid I don't know anything about BT Home Hub, (I try to minimise having anything to do with BT!). Orange have very good technical help section on their website, have you tried looking on the BT website for anything similar? Otherwise, hopefully some other knowledgeable MHF Home Hubber may be along soon . . .

I´m not really as paranoid as everyone thinks I am
We have a 'normal' house, we had to sell the Mansion when the Staff upped and went to work at Downton Abbey, and the lounge and kitchen are about the same distance from the router.
The laptop is reasonable new and works ok.
The router is 'BT Home Hub 2' and I can't see anywhere to fit an external antenna.
'rogerblack' suggested going into set-up mode and changing the channel on the router - any chance of a tutorial on how to do that please?
Go into your BT hub which is usually 192.168.1.254 and click on settings at which point you will need to put in your password. This will give you a few choices - select the one which says 'change the wireless network channel to avoid interference'
At this point you can choose to refresh or apply a setting instead of automatic and then click on apply.
I have gone through this routine so many times that I gave up, got an 8 port switch and hard wired the lot. If I am in the same room as the router with a laptop I have no problem, but outside then the probs begin
There is no facility to fit an antenna. The only other option is to fit a booster which will link to your router and extend its range.
he only way to get a good connection is by hard wire - my link speed is 1 Gbit/s
Hope that helps
I did complain to BT who sent another router which was worse

Happy Holidays to everyone for 2012
The above is only a personal opinion
I altered the Channel on the router, tried a few different channels, but it hasn't made any discernible difference - so I've changed back to Automatic.
The signal strength on the laptop is only 2 bars in the lounge and 6 bars in the kitchen - but only about 5 yards, and a wall, between them.
Probably have to try the Netgear range extender and I'll let you know what, if anything, happens.
Thanks again for the advice.

As an alternative to a range extender your wife could try a Wireless USB Network Adapter in the laptop. You can buy them on Amazon and elsewhere for £6 or £7. It may or may not make any difference! A possibility is that there is a hardware problem with the laptop. A year or so ago I found that my netbook was struggling to pick up wi-fi signals that my wife's netbook was getting at full strength. After trying all sorts of things, I concluded that it may be an internal aerial problem and sure enough the aerial wire running behind the screen was being pinched by the hinge. I had to disassemble the top of the keyboard and the screen bezel to get at it all but it wasn't difficult.
With the price of some of the range extenders you may as well just get a decent access point (which is what most extenders are anyway) and connect it to the existing router.
The Draytek network equipment is fantastic but there is a price premium, I highly recommend the Vigor 28830N router if you can justify the cost for the features and performance, I only retired my Vigor 2600 router after using it for 6 years, totally hitch free, because it didn't support adsl2+.
After saying that I had an old d-link DWL-2000AP+ access point which covered the whole house, garden and workshop etc easily.
With a new AP you could take the opportunity to move to 802.11n, although you may need to bet new wireless adapters for the PCs if they don't support it.
Personally I'm not very impressed with the netgear hardware, the devices themselves are fine but i've seen and experienced the power supplies failing around the 18 month mark too often, but they are only around £7.00 to replace.
I popped over to Maplins in Mansfield this morning and bought a Netgear Universal Wifi Range Extender WN2000 RPT for £50.
And its done the trick - no problem with the Internet connection anywhere in the house.
And its brought a big smile to my wifes face as she merrily searches for more and more bargains to give me as Christmas presents - allegedly!
Thanks for all the replies.
