In a preivious post i asked what anyone knew about Avtex T.V's. O.K But here is my dilemma. I have a sat dish, a tele which is bust and a freeview box which is also bust. If i just replace the whole system with an Avtex TV i do not need my sat dish, but a receiver on the top of the van, at about a total cost of roughly £550. O.k but then i don't need my sat dish which is a maxview and was not cheap. Would it be better to buy a new tv with freeview built in and still use my sat dish, the cost being about £130, i believe Sainsburys sell a tv with a 12v reducer for £130, there must be a tech man out there who can help me, i have asked locally but no luck. What shall i do?

I think you need to distinguish between FreeView and FreeSat.

To receive Freeview it sounds as if you need a new TV with built in FreeView AND an aerial.

To receive FreeSat I think you need a new TV and probably a FreeSat box. There may be TV's around with built in FreeSat but I'm not sure that they are common.

"Would it be better to buy a new tv with freeview built in and still use my sat dish,"

No. Freeview requires a terrestrial antenna. To use your satellite dish requires a satellite receiver.

You won't get a van-sized TV with a built-in Freesat receiver or a built-in Freeview HD receiver. You will get one with a built-in Freeview (not HD) receiver.

Terrestrial Freeview requires a digital aerial (since the UK has gone digital) and a receiver that has Freeview built in or a digibox attached,
If you wish to have Freesat, or to pick up Astra2 where programmes are free anyway, you will need the same 12v tv but also a satellite receiver (£60+) and a satellite dish (£40 - £2000).
You may also need to make a decision where you intend to travel; within the UK a terrestrial system is the cheapest choice.
As far south as S.France a dish up to 50cm should work, beyond that you really need a larger aerial.
I have a Multimo, from which I have picked up good pictures down to Gibraltar but not many UK programmes as I then depend on other satellites that carry few English speaking programmes.

I have a Zhender, but if you look at RoadPro's catalogue (https://www.roadpro.co.uk/retail/product_list.aspx?prod=Satellite+TV+ receivers ) who's information is very helpful or Outdoor Bits ( http://www.outdoorbits.com/satellite-systems-a-5.html ) you should not go far wrong in deciding which receiver to buy.
Good luck!
Alan

Satellite tele = 12V TV + 12V Sat receiver + Sat Dish
Terrestial tele = 12V TV + 12V freeview box (unless TV has in built freeview) + digital aerial.

If you are on EHU then as above but ignore 12V requirement.

Hope it helps.

Totally agree with what others have said about the diufference between freeview and freesat. Very Happy

We live in S France and pick up freesat via Astra 2 - gives us all UK channels available without Sky, works well, for that a dish is required and a freesat decoder - the choice is wide and the quality similar but be guided by RoadPro or ODB - ODB give a discount to MHF subscribers and you MIGHT keep an eye of the advent calender just in case (although I doubt it will appear Crying or Very sad ).

It comes down to whether you venture outside the UK and want to watch tele.... if you don't then a digital aerial and freeview will suffice in most parts of UK (except Highlands, Lake District and similar hilly parts).

If you visit France then freeview will NOT work, so freesat is the only option (or Sky if you have a subscription or buy the £25 card which gives you some channels). Freesat works very well and with your satellite dish should be OK in most of Europe EXCEPT the very South parts of Spain, Greece, Italy.

Hope that helps clarify.... Smile

now you have got me unsure after reading all this. Rolling Eyes Rolling Eyes
my tv is both digital and analog, I assume that this will enable me to reeive freeview without an extra box.maybe even all digital tv's receive freeview. I do understand that to receive freesat one does need a box and dish.
I also understood that one bought a digibox to enable your analog tv to receive digital channels.
The further south in Europe one goes then a different size dish is needed to pick up transmissions from a change of satelite.
Now have I got all that right.

Forget Analogue!
Almost all signals are now digital.
Outside of the UK... no Freeview.
Further south you go the bigger the dish you will need.
