Ive just cancelled in a fit of rage my Vodafone Mobile Dongle which I have had for years. I negotiated £7.50 for 3GB years ago and while I was away when incidently I never used it for over six months they put it back up to £15.

To be honest Im not sure I really need the dongle anymore. I tend to use my iPhone for most things or the wifi antenna and laptop.

I think I know the answer to this but is there any sim that I can stick in the now redundant Vodafone USB Dongle that lasts more than 28 days for occasional use. The answer I think I know is no there isnt but prove me wrong please.

I have an old Nokia N95 in the van which I can tether without Vodafone twiggiing but it means taking the sim out of the iphone everytime.

If this is a waste of time does the Vodafone USB Dongle have any value (ebay?) I think its unlocked.

Thanks
Barry

Barry,

Yes the dongle has a value on ebay, as everything appears to have.

I have a Voda dongle, but it is the PAYG type, I can load it when I need it, and the credit does not run out after 30 days, I use it occasionally, and this year only spent £15.00 on top ups.

Steve

No everlasting sim I know of Barry. Vodafone used to do one which people have seen on ebay from time to time.

Value of old dongle, if unlocked for sure, very little, maybe £10 to 20 but again check ebay. If not unlocked then probably a pound or two, Alan.

Edit: Note Barry, it's not the dongle that determines whether or not credit expires, it's the sim deal.

Thanks

Do you not think when I told them I was a little miffed that they doubled the price and that I hadnt used it for six months they would have offered me a PAYG downgrade?

Better than nothing isnt it?

Maybe Ill give them a ring back when Ive calmed down a bit

I have just installed the dongle and checked the balance, I still have £11.98 left.

Great value

You can still get them on ebay Here

Just make sure they are the non expiring type !!

No its not, not in Vodafones case

Vodafone do not sell the un expiring type of dongle anymore, and the sim that goes in it does not work in other dongles even when the dongle is unlocked.

It's not the dongle, it's the sim which comes with it. The dongle is only hardware, although you usually have to buy the dongle to get the sim, Alan.

If you have an iPhone, you don't need a dongle. You can set it up as a 'personal hotspot' (on settings) - it then becomes a wireless hotspot (iPhone 4), or you can connect via bluetooth (Iphone 3 & 4).

Then it just depends on your contract - Three, for example allow you to use your data via your iPhone on a laptop wifi iPad or Kindle etc. So in our case that 'all you can eat data' that we have on our £25/month Three contract becomes even more useful.

Other networks may still charge AFAIK.

If you have another type of phone (Android etc) you may have something called 'tethering', which is the same thing.

In the UK I just tether my phone to my Laptop. I think iPhone tethered usage is monitorable so perhaps put the sim in your dongle with the necessary fullsize simcard adapter if you have a iPhone 4.

I read somewhere about the iPhone 4S or was it iOS5 having the capacity for the handset to be used as a 'hotspot' allowing you connect via the Wifi as with Mifi devices and the tethered usage being undetectable? Not 100% on this but might be worth looking into.

In dongle terms what you want is a Vodafone K3565 dongle - these packages (dongle and sim, sim not sold separately) had non-expiring credit needing to be used once every 6 or 12 months to be kept active. At £15/Gb they're not cheap compared to longer term plans but great for a quick fix.

Sadly no longer available for £25 with £15 worth of credit and thus are commanding a premium on eBay - keep your eyes open for a bargain.

There were some K3565 dongles sold with the sim on which the data did not expire, but by no means all, so don't just buy a K3565. The deal on the sim which comes with the dongle is the important bit, Alan.
