I know there are a few Mac gurus on here so here goes.
Im going to see a new client tomorrow who wants to run his Quickbooks accounts package on his new Mac.
ITs a PC based product but from what I can gather you can load Parallels Desktop on the Mac then load a proper licensed copy or Windows 7 and then load the Quickbooks software.
Sounds like a recipe for disaster to me and the Parallels forum wasn't much help.
Anyone done it?

VMware Fusion.......works far better than parallels
Virtualbox is free but not sure on support
or you can use Bootcamp which is a Apple thing that allows you to boot into either Mac or windows as long as it is a intel Mac.
VMware Fusion is great and works very well.......just remember that the Mac will need a good spec for any of these as you are running 2 O/S at the same time

Thanks very much for the advice. Didnt know about the other products but might discount the freebee and bootcamp and go for one of the other two.
Next task is to see what version of Windows his 2005 quickbooks will run on?
Maybe I should just sell him a PC!

I thought the only version they did was PC based. Yes I suppose the web based option is possible.
The issue that is worrying me is that his current quickbooks version is 2005 so if we go the Parallels route or VMware Ill need to purchase Windows XP as it wont run on W7. All that seems to be available is OEM copies on ebay and Amazon. Im not sure they will work with these VM applications.

I have not found a version of XP or other O/S that will not work with Fusion
Or
Windows 7 has a "compatibility" tab on the shortcut for the application. What this means is that Win 7 will make the application think it is running on windows XP. MOST things that run on XP will run on Win 7.
Has the chap, who bought the Mac, got an old XP computer that you could use the licence from??
Thanks for that Waggys. Im not sure what he has until I go there tomorrow morning.
I have plenty of Windows XP Pro Service pack 1 and 2 CD's kicking about as might he but he wants to do it legit and I have concerns about the OEM versions for sale on Ebay working with Parallels.
I contacted an ebay seller today about XP Pro Mar service pack 3 he was selling and he said as OEM versions and MAR versions have an Answer File He wasnt sure but he seemed to remember Parallels having a problem with an answer file on Parallels so the customer had to install windows from an Image and activate with the key they provided.
If this is the case what are people buying and installing for Macs with either Parallels or VMware?

I run Win XP home in VM fusion 3.something purely so I have access to Quicken2000 (very old accts package no longer available).
I bought XP as an OEM unopened pack about 18months ago if I recall correctly. It installed fine, no issues, obviously no longer supported by MS even then, but had no registration/activation key problems.
Obviously speed isn't an issue, but even on a 3yr old MacBookPro with 4gb memory it runs windows apps as fast, if not faster than the Mesh XP machine I had at that time.

Thanks for that. Maybe thats the way to go then VM fusion and an OEM XP Service pack 3 off ebay.
I got excited as I found a Mac version of quickbooks. Only available in the US. Spent ages online chatting to an Inuit Quickbooks analyst about it.
Thanks everyone
I wonder if there is anything you could ask on here and not get an answer!!!
